NASN is applying for a grant and we are interested in collecting success stories that can be documented about school nurses who have been instrumental in improving the availability of healthy food and drinks, limiting unhealthy food and drinks, promoting increased physical activity, promoting active transportation to and from school, promoting health changes to policies and practices of procuring school food, and have encouraged parents and care givers to reduce screen time. The Department of Education has asked for input on whether the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a barrier for providing health care for children in school, for fulfilling state mandates for reporting infectious diseases, to holding school located vaccination clinics, and interacting with health care providers, acute care facilities and/or public health officials. If you have experienced any one of these barriers or other barriers due to FERPA or HIPAA, please tell us your story. Voices of Meningitis Update Raise Your Voice for Meningitis Prevention NASN is pleased to announce the Voices of Meningitis Challenge, an initiative to highlight member successes in raising awareness of meningococcal disease prevention within their communities. NASN encourages all members to Raise Their Voice in the fight against meningococcal meningitis. A comprehensive Voices of Meningitis Challenge "how-to guide" is available to provide school nurses with suggested ideas and strategies to implement activities using free, ready-to-use Voices materials.
