Get S.M.A.R.T. About Meningitis! Educational Resource Kit

The National Association of School Nurses “Get S.M.A.R.T. About Meningitis!” online educational resource kit contains sample communications materials and strategies to help school nurses raise community awareness about the dangers of meningococcal disease and the benefits of immunization.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends meningococcal immunization for all adolescents 11-18 years of age.

Materials in this kit include a PowerPoint presentation school nurses can use at their schools and sample parent, student and community education materials (parent letter, community letter, fact sheet, frequently asked questions (FAQ) document, newsletter article, flyer/poster) to help inform about the dangers of meningococcal disease, benefits of immunization and new CDC recommendations for immunization.

The materials are designed in a template format, to be easily adapted to include information specific to NASN members and schools’ meningococcal disease awareness and immunization programs.

Click on the links in the left-hand column to view the resource kit materials.

* Due to demand for the conjugate meningococcal vaccine outpacing current available supply, the CDC has temporarily recommended deferring vaccination of 11- to 12-year-olds at the preadolescent doctor’s visit until sufficient vaccine supply is available.

This program is supported through an unrestricted educational grant to the National Association of School Nurses from sanofi pasteur.
