Recognition and Distinguished Service Awards

  
NASN Recognition Awards  
One or more individuals or organizations to receive a Recognition  Award in the following categories:
  
1) An organization/individual who has continuously supported or uniquely contributed to NASN or has helped in promoting school nursing or school health services nationally.
 
2) A school nurse for a special NASN project.
 
3) A media journalist who has made a significant contribution by presenting/authoring a feature on school nursing. 
a.) Media Journalist Objectives:
To recognize an individual or news service that has supported or uniquely contributed to NASN, school nursing, or school health services through the media in the past year.
To recognize writers who effectively give audiences a greater awareness and understanding of the importance and value of school nursing through the media.   
b.) Media Journalist Selection Criteria
Story content is accurate, relevant, and creative.
Storyline has a positive major impact on public opinion or policy.
Storyline has made school health issues relevant to new audiences.
Storyline shows careful research and balanced fair reporting.
 
4) Lillian Wald Legislator/Public Policy award will be given to a legislator or public policy official who has supported or uniquely contributed to NASN, school nursing, or school health services.  
a.) The individual has effectively advanced legislation or public policy during the past year in areas of importance to school nursing.
b.) The committee may choose more than one recipient for the recognition award if it is determined that two or more candidates are of equal merit.
c.) If the committee feels that no individual meets the requirement in this category, no award will be given that year.

NASN Distinguished Service Award
One individual to receive the Distinguished Service Award using the following criteria:
 
1) The individual’s life and contributions to NASN could inspire others to promote the health of school children.
 
2) This individual shall also promote the Goals and Philosophy of NASN.
 
3) This individual shall be a member of NASN.
b. The Distinguished Service and Corporate Recognition Awards are limited to the selection of one candidate in each category to appropriately recognize the exemplary contributions the award focuses on.
c. Candidates not selected for the Distinguished Service Award will be retained in the nomination pool for the next four years.
d. If the committee feels that no recipient meets the requirements in a category, no award will be given in that category that year.
 

Nominations must come from NASN Officers, Board Members, and/or NASN Members.  Current Executive Committee members are not eligible to receive an award.

President’s Recognition Award
The Recognition Awards Committee shall approve the Presidents Recognition Award recipient(s). 
  
a. Purpose: To recognize significant and unique contributions to the NASN goals and  the President’s initiatives during his/her tenure.
 
b.  Applicant Requirement
1) Current and Active involvement with the NASN for at least the past two years
2) Membership in NASN for at least the past two years
3) Current Executive Committee members are eligible to receive the award.
4) Clear commitment to the mission of the NASN
 
c.  Judging: President will choose based upon the following criteria:
1) Benefit to school nursing practice
2) Impact on the organization
3) Promotion of current NASN goals
4) Promotion of the President’s theme
 
d. The Executive Committee must approve the nomination(s) by May 1st of each year of the President’s term. 


Outstanding School Nurse Educator Award
One school nurse educator to receive Award in recognition of a significant contribution to school nursing.
  
a. The National Consortium of School Nurse Educators will present a candidate selected from nominations by NASN affiliates or the National Consortium of School Nurse Educators
 
b. The candidate must meet the following criteria:
1) Be a current member of NASN and during the preceding 2 years,
2) Hold an academic position in a higher education setting,
3) Hold a Master’s degree (minimum) in nursing or education,
4) Not a current NASN officer or NASN Director
5) Show evidence of significant academic contributions and/or research related to the specialty practice of school nursing
6) Show evidence of outstanding service to NASN and/or impact upon school nursing at the national level.
7) Nomination must be postmarked by March 1. 
   
c. The Executive Committee will review the candidate and the NASN President shall notify the National Consortium of School Nurse Educators of its decision no later than April 15.
 
d. The recipient will be recognized at the Annual Conference with a certificate.

Outstanding Private/Parochial School Nurse (PPSN) Award
One private or parochial school nurse will annually receive an award in recognition of a significant contribution to school nursing.

a. The PPSN Special Interest Group (SIG) will present a candidate selected from nominations by NASN/PPSN members.
 
b. Selection Criteria: the candidate must:
1) Be a current member of NASN and during the preceding 2 years
2) Hold a school nurse position in a private or parochial school setting (currently and during the preceding 2 years)
3) Be a registered professional nurse
4) Not be a current NASN officer or NASN Director
5) Show evidence of significant contributions, publication, and/or research related to the specialty practice of school nursing
6) Show evidence of outstanding service to NASN and PPSN and/or impact upon school nursing at the national level. This may include involvement in state school nurse organization, publication in school nursing literature, participation in school nursing research, national certification in school nursing, or leadership in the PPSN SIG
  
c. The PPSN SIG must notify the NASN Vice President of the selected candidate by March 1.
  
d. The NASN Executive Committee will review the candidate’s information  and the NASN President shall notify the PPSN Chair of its decision no later  than April 15
 
e. Award recognition: the recipient will be
1) Announced at the Annual NASN Conference
2) Awarded a plaque or certificate
3) Recognized in the NASN Newsletter following the Annual Conference

If the committee feels that no individual meets the requirement in this category no award will be given that year.

Outstanding School Nurse for Special Needs Students Award
Recognition to an outstanding school nurse with an emphasis on the care of students with special needs

Selection criteria:
a)  Be a current member of NASN and a member during the preceding 2 years
b)  Hold a school nurse position (currently and during the preceding 2 years) and spend greater than 50% of her/his practice working with special needs students
c)  Be a registered nurse (RN)
d)  Currently not be serving NASN as an officer or member of the Board of Directors 
e)  Show evidence of significant contributions, publication, and/or research related to the specialty practice of school nursing
f)  Show evidence of outstanding service to NASN and special needs school nursing and/or impact upon school nursing at the national level.  This should include involvement in his / her state school nursing organization, publication in school nurse literature, and participation in school nursing research, NCSN certification, and active participation in the Special Needs School Nursing SIG.

The decision of the Committee is final and not open to appeal.
If no one is nominated or if the committee feels that no individual meets the criteria in this category, no award will be given that year.
