Employment: Harrison County Board of Education, RN, School Nurse, 1998 - Present: I service two elementary schools and one middle school.

    • Provide direct student care and management of students with acute and chronic health conditions.
    • Develop individual health care plans and emergency action plans for students with chronic health conditions.
    • Provide education to promote health to students, parents, staff, and personnel.
    • Provide student screenings and referrals.
    • Develop policies, procedures, and protocols for school health services.

    Statement of View:

    The shortage of registered nursing staff in the public-school setting is alarming. This disturbing issue not only affects districts, it also affects every state in the nation. Unfortunately, the population of professional nursing staff is disproportionate to the growing number of students with chronic health needs.

    Funding is a major deterrent and may be the most single reason why school nurses are being shared within districts and additional school nurses are not being hired. Federal, state and local funding are funding sources schools receive for their budget. This funding can be more or less depending upon the state or region you live in. Certain districts and states adequately fund for school nurses, however, the need for a school nurse in every school, every day is still missing. Because student health care needs are rising, more work to fund school nurses is necessary. The National Association of School Nurse staff and board of directors have done outstanding work with congress for a bill for under-resourced schools to increase school nurses through Title I.

    Consequently, as school nurses are shared and caseloads increase, non-medical personnel are caring for student’s medical health care needs, thus, acting in the role of the school nurse. The school nurse’s role is crucial in providing health services to students with acute and chronic health care conditions. While the conditions are becoming more complex, the absence of a school nurse put students at risk and could easily result in an undesirable and tragic outcome.

    The lack of school nurses is a critical problem. As the National Association of School Nurses vice president, I will advocate for a school nurse to be present in every school all day, every day to ensure students are healthy, safe and ready to learn. I understand the crisis and having a voice is a strong component of making change.
