The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on School Health and NASN have released an updated policy statement titled "Role of the School Nurse in Providing School Health Services."
The policy recognizes school nurses as essential members of health care and education teams and highlights their roles in direct care, care coordination, chronic disease management, mental and behavioral health, emergency preparedness, public health, leadership, and quality improvement. It also emphasizes strong collaboration and communication among school nurses, pediatricians, families, and other partners to support student health and academic success.
The policy calls for adequate school nurse staffing so that students have access to a school nurse in their building all day, every day, and for school nurses to be valued as leaders in school health decision-making.
