Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative communication style that can be integrated into everyday practice to improve conversations and serve as a catalyst for behavior change. This article reviews the fundamental principles and basic skills of MI. It discusses how MI has evolved from a therapeutic modality to a conversational style, applicable in the school setting and specifically for school nurses.
