    Welcome to Week #1
of our online NCSN Study Group.  Here is a little study group humor to set the tone for our group because we also need to have some fun and remember to enjoy the process.  In the end, you might just find that you learned a lot through this refresher course in school nursing practice!  To begin this process, it's suggested to start with the Selekman/Wolfe School Nursing Certification Review book.  Here is a link to the book:

    View this on Nasn >

The book gives great test-taking tips, which will be shared with our study group.  It also has test questions at the end of each review chapter. Chapters 1& 2 provide background/history of NCSN and test preparation tips.  Let's start our study group by reviewing the content of Chapters 1&2, and then focusing on Chapter 3, Foundations of Pediatric Nursing, including the assessment.  One idea that worked for me and others I have spoken with is to take the assessment at the end of the chapter first and then, while reviewing the content, pay extra attention to the sections where you missed the mark.  This is where you might want to review the Selekman School Nursing textbook or NASN's White Papers on the specific topics.

Assignment for Week #1: Review Chapters 1 & 2, Complete Assessment Chapter 3 and share a reflection with our group.
The more responses, the richer the discussion! I am here to support the group in any way I can, and I encourage you to reach out to each other as well for support, ideas, and suggestions to create the kind of virtual study group that you need.

Congratulations on taking this important step.  Once you dig into the content, I promise it will be fun and you will feel really empowered by taking ownership of the process.  Take the word study out of the equation and substitute it with being curious, we are life-long learners, it's the nature of a nurse! Keep in touch, and happy learning!

In Chapter 2, it is recommended to "take sample tests from other certification exams, i.e. pediatric nursing."  Do you have any recommendations for a specific certification review book on this topic?  Thank you.

    Hi Penelope,
Thank you for your question.  There will be a variety multiple-choice test questions shared as we go through the 6-week study group.  I am going to ask our resident expert @Janice Selekman, DNSc, RN, NCSN, FNASN to see if she would provide some suggestions regarding your post.

Welcome to the primrose path to prepare for the certification exam. While I am NOT an item writer for the NCSN exam, I can tell you that there are questions that overlap with pediatric nursing certification. While previous editions of Pediatric Nursing Certification Review (that I also wrote) had questions at the end of each chapter, the newest edition (2018) does not. If you have access to the older 'purple book', you can check out the questions. If not, I will try to share them as you go along.

See below for more information about clinical practice requirements.
    4. Complete the online application to take the certification examination for school nurses.

    Clinical Practice Requirements for Certification

Clinical Practice in school nursing means employed or contracted to provide a direct or indirect professional contribution to the health and education of students and their families in public or private school settings.

Direct clinical practice in school nursing is defined as involvement in the nursing process in a school setting where the nursing actions and judgments are focused on a particular student, family, school community, or group of students or their families where there is continuing professional responsibility and accountability for the outcomes of these actions.

Indirect clinical practice in school nursing is defined as involvement that:

    1. includes clinical supervision of school nurses, education and clinical supervision of baccalaureate/master's nursing students in school health, administration of school health services, research, consultation or other engagement in the field of school nursing that contributes to the specialty's body of knowledge or enhances the quality of school nursing practice;
    2. entails continuing professional responsibility and accountability for the outcomes of the involvement.

Not eligible as clinical practice in school nursing includes: substitute nursing in a school, except as a full time substitute working consecutive days for the required clinical practice hours; one-to-one nursing as the nurse's sole responsibility within a school; employment in the direct sales, marketing or distribution of school nursing-related products or services in pharmaceutical, technology or other school health-related industries; community health screenings; work in a camp setting; preceptorship/mentor; and jobs unrelated to school nursing.

I was told that all the documentation could be mailed, emailed or faxed. I had my supervisor write a letter verifying my hours, and I used unofficial college transcripts. I scanned them all and emailed them. The rep at NBCSN said that the transcripts I sent in were sufficient, that they did not need to be "official".

For anyone out there that may be interested, I bought an app on my phone called "NCSN Review" that has 700 questions for $9.00. I bought it a while back to practice questions no matter where I am. It's a great app that I would recommend to anyone.

Hi.  I took the exam in March and I passed.  This is what I used to study:  All tolled, I spent about  $200.00 on study "supplies".  Hope this helps.

    1. I bought the Certification Review book and Comprehensive Text

Product Information - S007 - School Nursing Certification Review-Most Current Edition
    2. used the resources from this online blog
    3. resources found on facebook page "school nurse certification exam study group"
    4. Bought the kindle "Nurse School (NCSN): Board and certification Practice Test" for $9.99. Link is below.  It was 200 questions that could be downloaded onto a phone, desktop or laptop.

    https://www.amazon.com/Nurse-School-NCSN-Certification-Practice-ebook/dp/B01AIPUM7M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1521635250&sr=8-2&keywords=ncsn+review&dpID=41w7xVtJLvL&preST=_SY445_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

    5. I went online and found a few questions here and there.
    6. NASN postition statements.
    7. I formed a study group which met every other week.  We worked on the questions after each chapter in the review book together.
    8. I split the cost of the NCSN practice exams with another person and we did the questions together.
