    Hi everyone,
We are so glad to see the interest in the online study group.  Every Friday for 6 weeks I will post a new set of suggested readings to follow through the opening of the summer test window.  In addition to the readings, I post test-taking strategies and other resources to support good outcomes for the exam.  The best part of the process happens when those who are studying share their suggestions, experiences, reflections about preparing for the test.  This is all done through this National Certification Exam Candidates Discussion group.  It is informal and our aim is to increase the level of support by giving structure for studying, providing resources and sharing the preparation experience.

We hope to grow the number of Nationally Certified School Nurses because the NCSN designation indicates school nursing as a specialty practice within nursing.  Here is an explanation of the rationale for NCSN as a specialty practice from National Board of Certification of School Nursing (NBCSN)

NBCSN is a regular member of the
American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) and the Nationally Certified School Nurses (NCSN®) certification program was granted accreditation by the Accreditation Board of Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC) in May 2008. ABSNC was created, in part, to create uniformity in nursing certification and to increase public awareness of the value of quality certification to healthcare. It is the standard-setting body for specialty nursing certification programs and offers a very stringent and comprehensive accreditation process. NBCSN provided extensive documentation demonstrating that it has met the 18 ABSNC standards of quality. Nursing specialty organizations frequently use the analogy that ABSNC is to nursing certification as JCAHO is to hospitals. What does ABSNC accreditation mean for those interested in becoming NCSN® certified or for those already certified? It means that a nationally recognized accrediting body has determined that the NCSN® credential is based on a valid and reliable testing process and that the structures in place to administer the examinations meet and even exceed the standards of the certification industry from a legal, regulatory and association management perspective. For further information about ABNS/ABSNC and the accreditation process and standards, visit their website at www.nursingcertification.org.

I think there is some confusion about the Online Study Group.  If you are a member of this discussion group, the online study group will occur through the group. Robin will post weekly "assignments" and it is expected that the members of this group who are participating in the "study group" will react and respond to those assignments with questions, comments and thoughts about the material and or the questions.

You don't need to sign up or do anything other than to be a member of this list to "join"  You might want to have your delivery option set to real time rather than daily because that can facilitate discussion but that is entirely up to you.

I hope this information was helpful.

    Hi everyone:

The online study group follows this book: Selekman, J., and Wolfe, L. School Nursing Certification Review (2010) NASN

Here is a list of resources that were used to create the NCSN exam. @Pat Krin, MSN, M.S., RN, NCSN-E, FNP-BC-Retired, FNASN Executive Director of NBCSN provided this list:

Here is a list of resources that NBCSN uses during test development. Please note that the board cannot endorse any products and that there is no product that can guarantee that you will pass the exam. When choosing preparation materials remember that this examination is testing your competency related to school nursing and that is where you want to focus, on the school-age child and education-related topics. Many available resources bear the NBCSN name, please note that at this time the only resource NBCSN itself provides is a practice test available on our website.

I would be glad to.  I think for me it was coming up with a study plan and sticking to it.  Meaning staying focus on whatever study plan you decide to follow.  I know for me it was all so over whelming.  There is so much information out there it can overwhelm you or at least for me it did. Come up with a study plan, give yourself plenty of time to study, and stick with it.  The test taking techniques you put out there really helped on the exam day.  As others have said, read the School Nursing Certification Review book if you are not sure about something look it up in the School Nursing: A comprehensive text  book and if you are still not sure ask questions...take advantage of this study group and don't be afraid to ask the questions.

Memorize Erik Erikson's Eight Stages of Psychosocial Development once and for all! In this video episode, I have a little fun using the peg word mnemonic device and ordinary household objects to show how mnemonics work and how to apply them to the challenge of memorizing Erikson's eight stages.
View this on The Psych Files >

Part of studying for the exam is to shake loose the content we all learned in nursing school.  Know that you already have this information in the deep recesses of your memory, you just need to uncover what you have stored.  I don't want anyone to stress over memorizing, try to put the information into context based on what you know about typical developmental stages. In this light, you can more easily retrieve what is already available in your memory bank!  It will all come back!
