    Things to think about:

The history of school nursing developed from the work of pioneers such as Florence Nightingale, Lillian Wald, Mary Seacole, Adah Thoms, Lina Rogers, and others, with early nursing efforts emphasizing sanitation, disease prevention, rural care, and access to health services. The Red Cross and Frontier Nursing Service expanded nursing services in rural communities, while school nursing evolved from treating illness to promoting prevention, health education, individualized care, wellness, and student learning. Important developments over time included school health programs in France and England which evolved to changing educational and certification requirements for school nurses. Over time the development of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and modern frameworks such as Coordinated School Health and the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model has truly shaped school health.

    Key ideas to Ponder:

School nursing focuses on assurance, policy development, systems thinking, social justice, and health equity to ensure students receive safe, fair, and effective care.

    • School nurses work with stakeholders, community partners, and multidisciplinary teams to address student needs and the social determinants of health, using the Social Ecological Model to understand how individual, family, school, community, and policy factors affect health.

    •  Healthy People initiatives and the Health Impact Pyramid guide health promotion and prevention, while primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention help prevent illness, identify problems early, and manage existing conditions

    • Culturally congruent practice promotes respectful, culturally sensitive, and individualized care.  Culturally effective nursing promotes cultural competence, humility, safety, health equity, and awareness of bias, racism, stereotypes, and disparities, using models such as Purnell and Cross to provide respectful, individualized care.

    • The ANA and NASN Codes of Ethics guide professional, ethical, equitable nursing practice, while evidence-informed practice combines research evidence, clinical expertise, and student/family preferences to improve health outcomes.

Chapters 3–5 and 9–10 focus on the school nurse's role in student wellness, education, evidence-based practice, growth and development, and culturally responsive care.

    • School nurses follow professional standards, licensure requirements, health frameworks such as WSCC and Danielson, and use individualized healthcare plans, health literacy, teaching strategies, and quality improvement.

    •  Evidence-based practice includes the nursing and research processes, PICOT questions, EHRs, data collection, partnerships, and clinical guidelines.

    • Developmental care addresses growth, nutrition, sleep, safety, brain and language development, puberty, mental health, sexual/gender identity, athletics, and technology, using theories from Piaget, Erikson, and Kohlberg.

With the things to think about were a lot of the different topics I found in the readings and tried to group them together.  Dive deeper into those topics and subtopics.  Take note of what you know and elaborate on areas that maybe do not apply in your current area of nursing or if you don't know as much about them.  It's going to be a great week!

Just finished Chapter 5 3rd edition.  I love education.  As in all the chapters there is much information though this chapter's information is so easy for me to follow.  Chapter 4 makes me nervous. Ugh.
I am working hard to making my studying a priority. . It is challenging with life's interruptions!! How I wish all the information in these chapters had a tactile ,application or quiz every so often.  With that said I am so grateful to the those who wrote the materials!  I cannot thank you enough.  Part of my learning process is sharing how I feel along the way, getting thoughts out during my breaks!

I hope to get to post my reflection prompt and answers to the week 1 questions soon. I suppose i should schedule that  in my study schedule.

Have a great day everyone and keep studying.  Off to the next chapter…

Hilary, you doing incredible.  Utilize different ways to study.  I actually used A.I. to help my son create study guides for his anatomy class.  So much supplementary guides to help you throughout this course available through Nurse builders and NBCSN.  I found the more I tried different questions the better with their review guide and questions. Just make sure everything is from a credible source.   You got this!

Megan, you will find the more you put into studying and thinking about how the information applies to your practice, the more you will retain.   It is so nice to be able to critically think through the why things occur after participating in this course.   Certification truly sets you apart as someone who is willing to go the extra mile!   Keep going, keep growing!

I would like to get my NCSN to build my knowledge about school nursing and expand my knowledge base to help students stay healthier and learn to control chronic health issues.  I have been a nurse for 31 years and school nurse for last 20 years.  I have thought about taking the test several times but have test anxiety.  I did take it this summer but did not pass, I feel that I know the information but struggle with the questions trying to pick out the best answer once I get to two answers.  I am hoping this will give me tips to improve my test taking skills.  I was close to passing the first time.  Question 1 C and question 2 D.
