Program Overview
School Emergency Triage Training (SETT) is a program for school nurses. It teaches effective management of school emergencies where there are mass casualties requiring careful planning, preparation, and training to maximize effectiveness under less than optimal conditions.  School nurses will learn how to coordinate the collection of information from a variety of sources to develop emergency disaster response plans which requires coordination with school administrators, staff, health care providers, and other community first-responders.

The purpose of this course is to provide school nurses with the knowledge, skills and training resources to lead school-based Disaster Response Teams and perform triage in response to mass casualty incident (MCI) events.

In this SETT online course you will be guided by a narrator through the sections until course completion. Throughout the program are video clips from the live or in-person SETT program to enhance the learning experience and show some classroom discussion. In addition, there are multiple interactive simulations and application of knowledge to optimize content retention. Resource links and documents are listed with the presentation. 

SETT Online Forum
To enhance the learning experience, all SETT online participants are invited to join the SETT Online Forum. Participants of this training can gain a great deal of insight from each other through online discussions and knowledge sharing.

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

1. Describe the importance of preventative training for disaster planning, organizing, training, equipping, exercising and evaluating and taking corrective action prior to a school Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) event.
2. Lists skills and characteristics a school nurse needs to be an effective leader in mass casualty response in schools.
3. Apply knowledge to develop basic disaster prevention, protection, mitigation, response and recovery plans for health service providers in schools.
4. Identify issues unique to the school setting that can impact the sustainability and effectiveness of disaster preparedness measures.
5. Discuss regional considerations related to disaster preparedness training with local and national resources.
6. Demonstrate how to use the START/JumpSTART algorithms to perform mass casualty triage.
7. Identify and list the principles and methods used to perform triage and response to school-based MCI events.
8. Identify strategies to engage school Emergency/Disaster Preparedness Team volunteers and administrative support.
9. Describe how the Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice ™ is applicable to Emergency/Disaster Preparedness.

Intended Audience
This continuing education program is an interactive and knowledge-based activity developed to meet the educational needs of registered nurses who are interested in advancing their practice as a school nurse in the management and mitigation of school emergency triage and training.
