  • 1.  Leading Causes of Death- Updated Version

    Posted 06-11-2025 15:22

Hello all- I signed up for my test this July... In order to have ample time to prepare I ordered the review book back in March directly from the website. Last week I received Nurse Builders Study Cards (2025 version).

It seems as though the leading causes of death for different age groups has been altered? I didn't know if anyone else had noticed this... I would love clarification to ensure I am studying the correct thing. Thanks!

    I believe it is:

    Unintentional Injury #1, Suicide #2, Homicide #3 , Cancer #4 for ages 5 - 21

    Great question!

The leading cause of death for all age groups is Accidental/Unintentional injury.  There are slight differences by age group.  That information can be found in the Updated Certification Review Guide, which is available now.

I would recommend you also know the 2nd and third cause of death for each age group.

    1-4: accidents/unintentional injury, congenital anomalies, assault/homicide

5-9: accidents/unintentional injury, cancer, congenital anomalies

    10-24: accidents/unintentional injury, homicide, suicide/self harm

If the question asks the is the main means of death for those 1-19, the answer is firearms

    Hello,

While scrolling through old forums, I came upon this info and am seeking some clarification.

In the book, for 6-12 year olds it says #1 accidents #2 suicide #3 cancer # 4 homicide

on the CDC website it says for ages 10-14 #1 accidents #2 suicide #3 cancer

but then here you have #1 accidents #2 homicide #3 suicide

    Would CDC be most accurate?

And with the differing in age groups with the book having them listed in groups of 3-5, 6-12, 13-19 and CDC having groups as 1-4, 5-9, 10-14 I'm confused which groups to focus on since there is some overlap in ages. I'm probably most definitely overthinking it, but I'm stuck on it.
