This Week's Assignment - Reflection Prompt

Why are you pursuing national certification?
Please share your response on this week's discussion thread. Reflecting on your "why" helps ground your motivation and builds community.

I pursued certification to ensure I had the most current knowledge and skills to support student well-being. Becoming nationally certified helped me grow both professionally and personally and gave me a network of school nurses equally committed to excellence. It's one of the best decisions I've made in my career.

    Let's Collaborate

Have a question about the content? Post it in the discussion! Refer to questions by chapter, number, and letter (e.g., Chapter 2, Question 4, Answer C).

Please do not copy questions or answers verbatim due to copyright.

Final Thoughts – You've Got This!

As we begin this journey together, remember: you're not alone. Whether this is your first time preparing for a certification exam or a return to formal study, know that this process is a powerful step forward in your professional growth.

This isn't just about passing a test-it's about strengthening your ability to support your students, advocate for health equity, and shine in your role as a leader in school nursing.

You've already taken a big step by showing up. Stay curious, stay committed, and lean on each other throughout this journey. I'm here to support you every step of the way.

You are more than capable. Let's do this-together.

    Hello,

So, I started in school nursing in 2001 as an LPN and eaRNed my RN in 2017. Since then, I have finished an BSN and an MSN. I have always wanted to be certified because it helps validate my knowledge to others and keeps me current in practice. I am aiming for the summer test window- probably in August. I am also planning to use the Nurse Builders review course. I will try to keep up with this group online but may not always answer things. I am looking forward to the journey.

Hello!  I hope this is the "discussion thread" please direct me if I am incorrect.

I have been a school nurse since 1998 (yikes!) all at the elementary level.  I had 3 years of pediatric experience prior to that.  I have considered national certification a couple of times but just didn't have the time at home for study.  As I am nearing the end of my career (and home life is an empty nest), I think I am ready to finally meet that goal.  I feel it's one of the highest achievments for school nurses. If I pass, hopefully school staff and collegues will have the same feeling.  I started studying in March. I have the nurse builder lecture series, note cards and practice tests.  I am looking forward to this journey-- I have learned things already!

    Good Morning

I am Denise Kozer from NorthCarolina. I am the lead nurse for our district, however my background consists of many areas of nursing.  I have mainly been in Mental Health, health clinics and emergency room in my nursing career. I laugh when I look back and thought in my younger years, I'll never be a school nurse, that is for older people who are wanting to slow down and retire with their nursing skills. (Man, that is so far from true.) I have taken the exam 2 times already well and Im here to say Im taking it and WILL pass in July this year. I have utilized all the quizes(free) book, online prep for school nurse certification by Janice and made flash cards. So this time Im taking the time to do the study group with everyone. Im here to say there was a lot of information on the test and I need to really buckle down more than ever to reach my goal of certification. I am looking forward to studying with a group and share their questions along with mine.

Thank you all for being part of my journey.

    Good morning,

Denise, this will be my third and final time taking the exam. I will pass the exam and proudly display the letters "NSCN". I have always wanted to become certified, but the opportunity did not present itself at the time. When I got hired as a school nurse in my district, my job was and is contingent upon me obtaining my school nurse certification. I have studied extensively and have taken the practice exams multiple times and I am feeling very confident this time. I was reluctant to even share this information, because I felt like a failure and I had beaten myself up so much til I thought about not even taken it again and just let my time run out.  However, God reminded me of the tenacious and resilient spirit that I have when it comes down to not giving up or quitting. I am determined this time to pass the exam and be more confident in my role as school nurse of West Greene Elementary in Snow Hill, NC. Thank you for sharing your story.

You are all so inspiring! I think a key to passing the exam is to believe in yourself! As you study, look at areas where you are less confident and focus on those. If you work at the elementary level, be sure to brush up on topics that are more pertinent to the secondary level, and vice versa. Also, be sure to carefully read the question and know what it is asking. Look for keywords like MOST, BEST, FIRST, etc. You can also flag questions that you aren't sure about, answer the questions you know, and then come back to the flagged questions. Most of all, breathe...and say to yourself, "I've got this!"

I look forward to seeing those posts this summer that say "I passed!"

    Good Morning,

I earned my BSN back in 2000 and have been a district nurse for the past 3 school years for a large district in SW Michigan. I am finishing up my capstone in the next 5 weeks and will walk away with my MBA with a concentration in healthcare administration. Since this will be off my plate, I feel it is the perfect time to go the NCSN while I am still in "learning mode". I am thankful for this group and hope to gain some pointers.

Have a great rest of your week,

Hi! I have been a district nurse for 2 years, but worked as a part time school nurse for about 5 years.  I have a fairly unique background where I have been able to work in a variety of areas.  I worked in a ENT peds clinic and have worked in peds mental health which will hopefully help with with this exam.

I want to earn this certification because I have meet a lot of great school nurses who have recommended I do this.  I love to learn so that is also a motivator.

I also started studying around March.  I have been making note cards and reviewing the review book.  I have an older version of the textbook that was gifted to me.  I am all about using test questions to help with my learning (that is how I got through my NCLEX years ago!) and have taped into gemini (good's AI) to get review questions.  Though I know it is not a full proof method of studying, it is helping me see where I need to study.  I also am planning on getting the note cards and test questions.

I am looking forward to learning for everyone and having a successful exam!

I've worked primarily in pediatric psychiatry since 2009 (since 2012 as a nurse) and I was board certified in psychiatric-mental health nursing. I left the hospital in 2020 for school nursing and have continuously been ensuring I'm utilizing best practices in my day to day practices. This has taken a lot of advocating at my school. I know there is still A LOT I don't know and I want to expand my knowledge while ensuring I'm providing my school community with the appropriate health services. I received a scholarship to test this summer and am just waiting for the new book to start studying!

I graduated with my BSN in 2018 and worked for 2 years at a children's hospital before finding my home in school nursing for the last 4.5 years. My school is all Pre-K and Early Childhood Special Education, which is tons of fun. I want to get my NCSN certification because I have a passion for health education and I am committed to furthering my knowledge to serve my community with the most up to date evidence-based practices! I received a scholarship to test this summer and have been studying with the 2020 Review Book and practice tests.

Wow, what a resource! Thank you, Sarah P, for supporting candidates for NBCSN certification and moderating this study group! I'm a bit late to the forum but will try to catch up.

In response to Week 1's prompt: I have been a registered nurse in California since 1992 and a school nurse since 2005. Becoming a school nurse was the best career decision I've ever made! I absolutely fell in love with the role of the school nurse in supporting students, families, staff, and the school in meeting their goals in academics and health. After a while, I found myself thinking about how school nurses could be more effective so I got my administrative credential and worked as the Director of Nursing Services in my district for 11 years. Still in love with the profession, I decided to start a credential program at SF State University to provide a local option for school nurses in the Bay Area to get their clear credential. We are only completing the 2nd full year of the program and have had candidates from all over the state! This has been such an enriching opportunity to not only help newer school nurses clear their credential but to engage in rich discussion about our scope of practice, addressing health inequities, and ways we can demonstrate leadership.

Though I feel absolutely fulfilled in my current role as a lecturer and program coordinator in the credential program, I believe I can be more deeply grounded by testing my understanding of the national landscape for school nurses. Along the way, I trust I will fill some gaps in my knowledge which will make me an even more valuable resource for my students.

This is an area that I also feel I need to review more carefully, though I think we are intuitively aware of the social, physical, cognitive, behavioral and emotional development of the students we work with, without necessarily knowing the names of the stages!

If I find a pneumonic, I will share!

I have been a school nurse for three years; my original training was in critical care and most recently occupational health. I obtained my BSN and am working to determine which MSN track I want to complete (began an NP program but Covid sidelined the clinical portion).  I am pursuing the NCSN certification to further my knowledge so I can advocate for the students I serve.  I work for a small, private school and have definitely learned a lot along the way.  The NASN community has been a wealth of knowledge for me as I navigate challenges of working with students and also advocating for improved health practices within my school.

    Hi everyone,

Week 2 and 3 were up because I saw them. I am following but not always commenting. I am also doing the Nurse Builders Janice Selekman class. So far that's been really good too.

    Hi everyone,

I have been so busy at work that I am just getting around to joining this discussion board. Our students are still in school until this Friday! I am a "District" Nurse in Oregon and have been for 5 years. In April, I was promoted to supervise all the nurses. I have badly been wanting to get this certification. I am scheduled to test in August and will be spending the summer studying. I am looking forward to what this group brings!
