The Basics of School Medicaid: Focusing on Success for School Nurses

Do you wish you had more staffing or resources in your school district to better serve students’ health needs? Your school district may be able to increase revenue for school health services via your state’s School Medicaid program. Although it depends on the state where you work, nursing services listed on students’ individual education plans (IEPs) have generally been reimbursable since School Medicaid was authorized in 1988. With the option to expand state School Medicaid programs beginning in 2014, many states allow billing for medical services provided to students who do NOT have IEPs.

Whether you are new to School Medicaid or experienced with this federal-state program, you will learn something new – and have fun – during this General Session on Saturday June 29th from 9:45 – 10:45am. You will also hear from school nurse colleagues from around the country as they share some of their successes with School Medicaid. Knowing more about the “why” of School Medicaid, its history, and the changes moving across the country will help you advocate for and participate in this important program that helps address health equity gaps.

As a former school nurse/nurse administrator, now in an educator role, I am honored to co-present this fascinating topic with Bob Bundy, School Medicaid expert consultant. To reinforce your learning, as a NASN member, you can access our full article, School Medicaid for School Nurses, in the May 2024 issue of NASN School Nurse.
