Research Application Process

  • Grants and awards will be made through a competitive procedure.
  • All qualified applications will be read and rated by the reviewers. The reviewers will assign a score to each application using Scoring Criteria/Ranking Sheets (FORMS 503 and 504).
  • The application(s) with the highest averaged score will receive the grant(s) or award(s).
  • The winning applicant(s) will be notified by the NASN President.
  • NASN reserves the right to negotiate the budget and not to make the grant or award if negotiations are unsuccessful or if no application meets a minimum scoring criteria as determined by review committee.
  • The decision of the Committee shall be final.

Applicant Responsibility

Applicant Qualifications

  • Must be a qualified professional school nurse engaged in one of the following:
    • Practice of school nursing
    • Education of school nurses
    • Study of school nursing (graduate or undergraduate student) or be retired from school nursing
  • A current member of NASN
  • The grant applicant must submit a signed letter of commitment giving assurance specifications will be met

Terms of Agreement

  • The funds may be used for conducting the actual research, substitute stipends, applicant’s release time for purpose of the research, supplies, clerical assistance, travel expenses, or other appropriate expenses directly related to the research project. Purchase of equipment is not an allowable cost. A budget with a narrative budget justification must be included in the application package.
  • Awards will be made for completed research unless otherwise specified.
  • Applicant(s) must follow all instructions, inclusive of specified format and application completeness

Application Instructions

  • The application for NASN Research Grants and Awards is posted online each year in September.
  • The application process is completed by downloading an application from the NASN website, completing it, and emailing it back to NASN.
  • FAXED copies of the application are not accepted.  Research project must be emailed to the email address of the currently assigned project staff member with the subject line: Research application
  • Unless otherwise specified, applications must be emailed no later than March 1st.
  • Applicant must meet qualifications and follow specified format to be eligible for review.

Specified Format

  • Page size of 8 ½ x 11
  • Double spaced
  • Borders can be no less than one (1) inch.
  • Font size restricted to 12 point.
  • Project narrative and budget pages for proposed research must be numbered and include title of the project.
  • Project narrative for proposed research cannot exceed 10 pages, excluding budget, budget narrative, or attachments. Summary for completed research cannot exceed 5 pages. Applications not meeting these criteria will not be reviewed.
