As school nurses, we hold a unique and vital role in ensuring that all students, including those navigating pregnancy, feel supported and cared for. I am excited to invite you to my NASN session, "Empowering School Nurses: Navigating Pregnancy Support for Students," where we will explore practical ways to foster a supportive environment for pregnant students in school settings.
In this session, we’ll discuss the unique needs of pregnant students and how school nurses can advocate for equitable care, including physical and educational accommodations, such as 504 Plans or home tutoring during postpartum recovery. We'll also highlight how Title IX protects pregnant students' right to continue their education without discrimination.
An essential part of our discussion will center on knowing and understanding your state laws regarding adolescent rights, including privacy, confidentiality, and access to reproductive health services. Armed with this knowledge, school nurses can better navigate conversations with students and their families while ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
We'll also explore the importance of community collaboration—building partnerships with local resources and organizations to provide comprehensive support for pregnant students. Case studies and real-life examples will illustrate how a judgment-free, supportive environment can significantly impact teen mothers' graduation rates and future success.
