School nurses care for diverse populations. NASN’s School Nursing Practice Framework™ calls for an action-oriented approach to school nursing practice (Tanner et al., 2024). The Future of Nursing 2020-2030 – Charting A Path to Achieve Health Equity report, points out the need to expand and diversify school nursing practice to advance health equity for students (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2021).
On December 1st of 2024, a group of NASN delegates traveled to Cuba, for a high-level, in-depth international exchange of both culture and professional school nursing practice. The desired outcome… to foster one-on-one dialogue with our Cuban nursing counterparts. The delegation of school nurses and school nurse educators was led by NASN President, Kate King and President-elect Lynn Nelson. Our meeting topics included: models for health care, school health, school nursing practice, mandatory, health requirements such as immunizations, major health concerns, and Cuba’s educational matriculation process.
We invite you to join us as we recount our visit in Austin at NASN2025 on Friday, June 27, 2025 at 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM. Learn about the people of Cuba, their unique resilience despite severe economic hardships and the healthcare challenges encountered by Cuban nurses. We will share takeaways and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions during a panel discussion with nurse delegates who participated in this professional exchange.
