 Leadership Academy  

NASN and their Affiliates work in partnership to advance the delivery of professional school health services to promote optimal health and learning in students.  In order to meet NASN's ongoing commitment to the leadership development needs of members and Affiliates, NASN offers a one-day volunteer leadership workshop on the pre-conference day of the NASN Annual Conference each year. 

Affiliates are invited to send two participants to attend the Leadership Academy.  Invitations with Academy details are sent out to Affiliate Presidents each spring so that Affiliates can identify appropriate representatives.  Academy topics have included:

  • Leadership Academy to Prepare Leaders in:
    Identifying federal budgetary regulations;
    Discussing strategies to maintain compliance with federal regulations; and
    Describing basic steps in meeting planning.
  • Inspiration and Influence for Leadership: The Art of Clear Communication
    Goal: Identify and explain the key elements of effective communication
  • Running with Scissors: A Program in Crisis Management for Public Affairs, Media, and Advocacy
    Goal: To create planful approaches to advancing school nursing practice and student health adovacy in the public arena.
  • Good Governance
    Goal: To understand basic principles and concepts, and remember risk management tips.
  • Leadership Boot Camp
    Goal: An interactive workshop that focuses on trends impacting associations in general, NASN/Board roles and responsibilities, guidelines for improving success in meeting members expectations, and other related topics.
  • Strategies to Improve Diabetes Legislation
    Goal: To discuss strategies and language to use at the state level and national level to change the Diabetes Prevention Access and Care Act to reflect safeguards for student with diabetes.
  • Association Web Sites
    Goal: To discuss how a web site can meet the needs of members and promote the profession.
  • Maximizing Media Relations
    Goal: To assist identified school nurses to enhance their media skills and capability as spokespersons.
  • Expanding Your Borders
    Goal: To assist identified school nurses to enhance their leadership skills and effectiveness as advocates.
  • Leadership Skills to Enhance Cultural Transformation
    Goal: To integrate Core Leadership Competencies into the work environment.
  • You Can Use Research
    Goal: To teach participants how to develop evidence-based screening guidelines for school health.
  • Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges
    Goal: To stimulate the development of creative approaches to traditional models and issues for school nurse leaders.
  • The Future Ain't What It Used To Be
    Goal: To assess NASN leaders' working knowledge of the association and to provide training to enhance leaders' knowledge and skills.
