Our host city of Chicago is the stage for many movies, musicals, plays and tv shows. Blues Brothers, Home Alone and the timeless Ferris Buellerโ€™s Day Off are all Second City classics. Today, one critically acclaimed tv offering set in Chicago is FXโ€™s, The Bear . A touching and funny story about a young chef and his โ€œfamilyโ€ as they struggle to create fabulous food and a livable life. In a season two scene, (spoiler alert) one character uncharacteristically contemplates the meaning of a sign which hangs under a kitchen clock in a Michelin Star restaurant - โ€œEVERY SECOND COUNTS.โ€ The double meaning, one about running an efficient restaurant and another about ...

Breathe Easier: How You Can Improve Student Health Through Better Indoor Air Quality School nurses are in a prime position as community health leaders to set best practices in their schools to promote healthier environments with good indoor air quality for students and staff. Children are more vulnerable to the impacts of air pollution since they are growing rapidly and breathe faster than adults. Additionally, asthma is a prevalent chronic illness among school-aged children and a leading cause of absenteeism. At Chemical Insights Research Institute (CIRI) of UL Research Institutes, our goal is to help professionals across ...

Do you wish you had more staffing or resources in your school district to better serve studentsโ€™ health needs? Your school district may be able to increase revenue for school health services via your stateโ€™s School Medicaid program. Although it depends on the state where you work, nursing services listed on studentsโ€™ individual education plans (IEPs) have generally been reimbursable since School Medicaid was authorized in 1988. With the option to expand state School Medicaid programs beginning in 2014, many states allow billing for medical services provided to students who do NOT have IEPs. Whether you are new to School Medicaid or experienced with this ...

However, to successfully navigate this nursing specialty area and more confidently adapt to the school nurse role, contracted school nurses need an experienced school nurse to provide immediate and ongoing support and mentorship. Enter the virtual school nurse clinical advisor. School nurse clinical advisors apply their wealth of experiences as former school nurses and school nurse administrators to virtually facilitate success among school ...

In-Person NASN2024 Session Saturday, June 29: 11am-12:15pm Chicago, Illinois When you think of student health in schools your first thought is not telemedicine. However, telemedicine is quickly becoming a tool to fill the gap between the consistent problems of workforce shortages and budget limitations. Telehealth allows virtual nurses to help underserved communities that may not have access to an in-house school nurse. Examples of these communities include Indian reservations, rural areas, or, on the opposite end, densely populated school districts, all with one problem: a shortage in access to school healthcare. To be clear, Iโ€™m not suggesting telemedicine ...

Have you considered how effective your school's efforts are at educating young people about their health? Is the curriculum scientifically accurate, age-appropriate, culturally sensitive and trauma-informed? Are people with disabilities, those from traditionally marginalized groups, gender-diverse folks, and others excluded from what is often outdated and non-inclusive programming? And what can you, as a school nurse, do to advocate for more comprehensive and equitable health education? These are major components of our public health and leadership responsibilities under the newly-revised School Nursing Practice Framework. Join us at #NASN2024 on Friday, June ...

Throughout your school nursing career, youโ€™ve probably often wondered what do I need to include, or exclude, in my documentation? In the upcoming session, โ€œSurefire Documentation Techniques: What Every School Nurse Needs to Knowโ€ on June 30, 8:15 โ€“ 9:45 a.m. at NASN2024, youโ€™ll get a chance to explore documentation in depth. Weโ€™ll discuss whatโ€™s relevant to include in your documentation, and what is just filler. This is especially important when you consider that whatever you write, or type, into the medical record could be read in open court later. If your charting is less than stellar, it goes to your credibility. And, once youโ€™ve lost your credibility, ...

This session will be presented at In-Person NASN2024 on Sunday, June 30, 2:00pm โ€“ 3:15pm In this day and age, most schools are well-versed in prevention and intervention strategies for school crisis management, but how well is your school equipped to fluidly handle the events after a crisis unfolds? How and when is information verified and shared with staff and the school community? What is a โ€œFlight Teamโ€ and how do they help the day after, and in the days to come? What do we do with the empty desk? And finally, what is the school nurseโ€™s role in all of it? Cheri Lovre is a teacher and national speaker who has 35 years of experience in working with ...

Kristin Beers, MSN, RN, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for Adolescents and Adults Long before becoming familiar with terms like intersectionality, sexual assault nurse examiner, or even the specialty of forensic nursing, I recognized that the heart of nursing lies in making connections. School nurses understand that our clinics are where healing begins, embracing every type of diversity and honoring individuality. In my dual role as a school nurse and a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE), I often find myself as a trusted adult students come to visit. With 23 years experience as a school nurse and 7 years as a SANE, disclosures from students regarding adverse ...
