ENGAGEMENT EXPECTATIONS & OPTIONS

ENGAGEMENT EXPECTATIONS

The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) is required by our accrediting body, the ANCC, to incorporate engagement activities into conference presentations. Each 60-minute presentation should have 1-2 engagement activities.

Presenters should plan and integrate learning engagement activities while developing your presentation, ensuring they are included before submitting slides to NASN.

Engagement activities may include icebreakers, live audience polls, or other interactive elements. These activities should be appropriate for the session's delivery format. (See what is allowed below).

Important: Attendees will have access to presenter email addresses, which may result in direct outreach from participants.

GENERAL SESSION ENGAGEMENT OPTIONS

If a general session requires computer or mobile app software not listed below (e.g. Mentimeter), please contact NASN's Education and Conference Manager, Devin Dinkel, at ddinkel@nasn.org to discuss compatibility with conference presentation technology.

Speaker Q&A

NASN will provide Slido as the designated Q&A platform.

NASN will ensure attendees understand how to use the app.

A member of the NASN nursing team will serve as the question moderator.

Presenters should encourage attendees to submit questions via Slido.

Presenters must inform the moderator whether questions will be addressed throughout or at the end of the presentation.

Audience Polling

NASN will provide Slido for live polling.

NASN will instruct attendees on using the polling feature.

NASN will launch and close polls at appropriate times and display results on -screen.

Presenters must include each poll on a separate slide and inform NASN of poll locations within their slide when slides are submitted.

Presenters should introduce each poll and allow one minute to responses.

Participant Discussion List

NASN will host an online discussion list for conference attendees and presenters.

Presenters can direct attendees to post follow-up questions or comments.

Icebreakers

Select an icebreaker relevant to your topic to initiate participant interaction.

Case Scenarios

Include a slide outlining the case scenario.

Read the scenario aloud to ensure that attendees hear the scenario.

Prompt attendees to consider the scenario before reviewing the correct response.

Explain the rationale behind the conclusion.

Videos

Video must be embedded within your PowerPoint presentation.

Pause at key moments to ask thought-provoking questions.

For scenario-based video, pause before the resolution and ask participants to predict the outcome.

Live Demonstrations & Hands-On Activity

Conduct a live demonstration, followed by participant practice of the skill or concept.

BREAKOUT SESSION ENGAGEMENT OPTIONS

NASN does not provide polling or Q&A software for breakout sessions.  If you plan to use such technology, please contact NASN's Education and Conference Manager, Devin Dinkel, at ddinkel@nasn.org.
