Leveraging Technology to Enhance School Nursing Workflows and Address Social Drivers of Health

By Stacy Barber, MSN, R.N., NCSN posted 2 hours ago

As school nurses, we understand how tough it can be to juggle paperwork and the real work of caring for students. Too often, administrative tasks pull us away from what matters most—helping students overcome barriers to learning and health.

Join us at NASN2026 on Tuesday, June 30, from 10:00 AM to 11:15 AM, where we will share how we applied nursing leadership to quality improvement. Guided by the NASN School Nursing Practice Framework™, we developed practical strategies that have helped my team reclaim our time and focus on students.

By using technology wisely, we can make our workflows more efficient and support every child, especially those affected by Social Drivers of Health, like economic stability and language access.

Here are four proven projects that made a real difference in my district:

  • Auto-importing screening data: Saves time and reduces errors, so we can quickly identify students who need extra help.

  • Automated mail merges: With standardized, multi-lingual referrals, families get clear information in their own language, making it easier for them to connect with school health services.

  • Electronic health record (EHR) modifications: Faster, simpler IHP creation means less time behind a screen and more time supporting my most medically fragile students.

  • Audit reports: Help us stay compliant and maximize Medicaid reimbursement, which means more resources for our students.

Improving our systems isn’t just about saving time—it’s about making a real impact. When we spend less time on paperwork, we have more time for care coordination, family engagement, and building strong relationships. This leads to greater job satisfaction and better outcomes for students.

We encourage attendees to collaborate, innovate, and adapt these strategies to their own settings—transforming time and data into powerful tools for promoting student health, educational access, and health equity across districts, while strengthening social and community connections. We look forward to seeing you there!
