Nursing shortages have created so many challenges for school health. We don’t have enough nurses, time, money, or resources! Using creative strategies for continuing professional development (CPD) can help support the education, retention and morale of a diverse school nurse workforce.

We sent an informal survey using Qualtrics to school health supervisors across 24 districts in Maryland along with a review of the literature to learn about the impact of professional development on nursing practice.

We came up with several creative strategies for Professional Development, you won’t want to miss! Find ways to keep your nurses motivated and interested by offering a variety of continuing professional development opportunities.

Check out our Specialized Health Needs Interagency Collaboration Program or SHNIC website for more great resources for school nurses. SHNIC is a grant funded partnership between the Kennedy Krieger Institute and the Maryland State Department of Education.

We are nurse educators and provide training to schools and community programs throughout the state of Maryland. The education we provide ensures children with specialized health care needs the ability to safely participate in school and community programs.

If you would like to hear more about continuing professional development please come check out our e-poster presentation at NASN2023! [Poster presentations are included with registration to In-Person NASN2023 or Virtual NASN2023.]
