Susan Hoffmann, MSN, RN, NCSN

    


Bio

Susan Hoffmann, MSN, RN, NCSN has been involved in school nursing practice for many years. From 2016-2018, she was employed by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) as the Nursing Education Project Manager. During that time, she was the project lead (in collaboration with National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and Families Fighting Flu) for a CDC-NCRID the five-year funded "Keep Flu out of School" project focused on improving influenza vaccine uptake among students in elementary schools.
Susan began her school nursing career in 1995 in the Caesar Rodney School District, retiring in 2016 with over 21 years of service. As a school nurse, she served two terms as lead nurse for the school district. Susan has worked with elementary school students as well as with students with intensive emotional and behavioral needs. She has been a Nationally Board Certified School Nurse since 2005 and served as as a 1:1 mentor and district lead mentor in the Delaware Continuous Induction Program. Currently, she serves on the School Nurse Advisory Group for the Continuous Induction Program and continues to mentor novice school nurses in the state.Prior to becoming a school nurse, Susan worked both as a staff nurse and supervisor in pediatrics, inpatient acute care mental health and patient education. In addition, she has served as adjunct faculty at Delaware Technical and Community College and at Wesley College.

Susan graduated from Wesley College in Dover DE with a Masters Degree in Nursing in Wellness and Health Promotion and received the Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Barton College in Wilson NC. She contributed to the 2020 edition of the School Nurse Resource Manual and the 2013 edition of the award winning textbook, Selekman’s School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text. She also co-authored a chapter in the Delaware School Nurse's Technical Assistance Manual. She is a Past-President of the Delaware School Nurse Association and a Past Board Member of NASN.

Susan has a special interest in the care of students with chronic health conditions particularly asthma, diabetes, seizures and emotional disabilities. She had the privilege of presenting NASN's H.A.N.D.S program for national and regional audiences from 2007- 2018, is a national presenter for NASN's Focus on the Framework program and continues to volunteer during her free time at camps for kids with diabetes. She has been an active member of the Delaware Asthma Coalition and served on the Epilepsy Foundation of Delaware advisory committee.

Susan was recognized as the 2013 Delaware School Nurse of the Year, and received the 2012 Delaware Nurse Association Community Based Excellence in Nursing Award.
