School Nurses, especially those who are new to school nursing, need to learn to utilize the collection of data to drive their services that are delivered, and to share that data to support the mission of the school which is the student’s academic success. Also, school nurses report a lack of understanding of privacy law governing the health data collected and maintained by school nurses and how to share data in compliance with the law.
As a result of participating in this educational activity, learners will be able to:
- Gain an enhanced understanding of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Learn the important factors to consider when entering data sharing arrangements and partnerships across sectors.
- Understand the difference between legal data sharing agreements and memoranda of understanding, their elements, and when each is appropriate.
- Apply learned material to real world scenarios.
