As promised, here are nursing test-taking strategies for multiple-choice questions (retrieved from 11 Test Taking Tips & Strategies For Nurses * Nurseslabs)

1.        Pay Attention to Specific Details

a.        The well-written multiple-choice question is precisely stated, providing you with only the information needed to make the question or problem clear and specific. A careful reading of details in the stem can provide important clues to the correct option. For example:

b.        Example: A male client is told that he will no longer be able to ingest alcohol if he wants to live. To effect a change in his behavior while he is in the hospital, the nurse should attempt to:

                                                                                             i.         Help the client set short-term dietary goals

                                                                                          ii.         Discuss his hopes and dreams for the future

                                                                                       iii.         Discuss the pathophysiology of the liver with him

                                                                                       iv.         Withhold approval until he agrees to stop drinking

This Week's Assignment - Reflection Prompt

What are some common challenges you face when conducting health appraisals, screenings, and physical assessments in a school setting, and how do you address these?

Absenteeism, forgot my glasses, student does not show for appointment, student does not follow directions, or parent/guardian sends in a note " Do not screen".

Remedies that have improved my screening process are:

Avoid EHall electronic passes and hand out paper health screening passes in homeroom.

Check the log for students arriving late that missed homeroom and screen them another period.

Check with the PASS team to arrange for health screenings for students chronically absent.

Write on the paper health screening pass "bring glasses to the health screening"

Each student places their phone, ear buds, and/or Beets headphones in a pouch upon entering the nurse's office.

Make good eye contact with each student while explaining the health screening in detail.

University Nursing Students can assist me with health screenings twice a year.

Other than the practice test we can purchase, Are there any we can take for free that would be a good guide for how the questions are formatted? This is what I had issues with before, dissecting the questions and understanding what they are asking. I will need all the practice I can get lol!! I have done the ones at the end of each chapter and they are not like the questions on the test at all. So any direction or help would be appreciated!

So some challenges we have faced with screenings is abesantism. The nurse's in the district decided that we would start keeping a strict log and keep track when the kids are in school so we can get their screenings done. We had the teachers help with students who are chronicly absent so when they did come to school we could get the screenings done. IF we had a parent that stated do not screen we would honor their request but call and explain what we are actually doing with the screenings and the information we get from the screening. Alot of times educating them helped.
