NASN Strategic Plan 2026-2028

A Roadmap for the Future of School Nursing

NASN’s 2026–2028 Strategic Plan outlines our shared path forward, one that strengthens the school nursing profession, advances student health, and ensures every school nurse is equipped to lead in an evolving healthcare and education landscape.

Grounded in our mission to equip school nurses with evidence-based resources and support, this plan focuses on the priorities that matter most to our members and the students and communities they serve.

What This Means for School Nurses

This Strategic Plan is more than a framework; it’s a commitment to supporting school nurses in their daily work and long-term impact.

Through this plan, NASN will:

  • Strengthen your role as a leader in school health
  • Advocate for the resources and funding you need
  • Elevate the impact of your work through data and research
  • Build a more connected, supported professional community

What We're Focused On

The Strategic Plan is built around three core pillars, supported by a strong organizational foundation.

Pillar 1: Workforce Development & Support

A strong, supported workforce is essential to the future of school health.

NASN is committed to strengthening the school nursing pipeline, supporting professional wellbeing, and ensuring school nurses are equipped to meet the full spectrum of student health needs. This includes advancing professional identity, promoting resilience, and prioritizing equity in workforce development—especially in communities with the greatest need.

Pillar 1: Workforce Development & Support

Pillar 2: Sustainable Investment in School Health

Students cannot succeed without access to consistent, well-supported health services.

This pillar focuses on advancing policies, partnerships, and funding models that ensure school nursing services are adequately resourced. NASN will advocate for sustainable and equitable funding while helping define what effective investment in school health truly looks like.

Pillar 2: Sustainable Investment in School Health

Pillar 3: Research & Evidence

Data and evidence are critical to demonstrating the impact of school nursing.

NASN will continue to generate and translate research that strengthens practice and informs policy. This includes building capacity for data use among school nurses and elevating the National School Health Data Set: Every Student Counts! as a leading source for evidence-based decision-making.
