NASN Statement on the Impact of Hurricane Damage

By NASN Inc posted 10-14-2024 10:14

The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) stands in solidarity with the communities affected by the devastating impact of recent hurricanes. As natural disasters continue to disrupt lives, schools, and the health of students across the nation, NASN recognizes the critical role of school nurses in ensuring the well-being of children during times of crisis.

In times like these, the vital role of school nurses is more evident than ever. School nurses are often the first responders within educational settings, providing essential health services and emotional support and connecting families to community resources in the aftermath of disasters.

We urge local and state officials to prioritize the reopening of schools and the restoration of school health services as part of the recovery process, recognizing that children’s health and education are interlinked.

Together, we can rebuild and create resilient environments where children can continue to learn and thrive despite the challenges posed by natural disasters.

NASN remains committed to supporting school nurses with the resources and training they need to respond to emergencies, and we encourage school districts to ensure adequate preparedness measures are in place to safeguard the health of students. Together, we can rebuild and create resilient environments where children can continue to learn and thrive despite the challenges posed by natural disasters.

For those who wish to contribute to relief and recovery efforts, we recommend donating through trusted organizations such as the American Red Cross or volunteering their expertise through the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by these catastrophic events, especially our colleagues, friends, and communities who have experienced significant loss. During this difficult time, NASN has reached out to our affected state affiliates to offer support and assistance in any way we can. We stand ready to help our members and the broader community as they navigate the challenges of recovery. We will continue to advocate for policies that support disaster preparedness, recovery, and the critical role of school health services in maintaining the well-being of students nationwide.
