To Our Dedicated School Nurses,
In these confusing and often unsettling times, we, the leadership of NASN, want to extend our deepest gratitude and unwavering support to each of you. Your role as caregivers, advocates, and trusted figures in schools has never been more critical.
We recognize the immense challenges you face as you work to ensure the health and well-being of students, staff, and, by extension, their families. Parents need to feel safe sending their children to school. Children need to feel safe and supported at school while they learn and grow. As school nurses, you play an essential role in fostering this sense of safety and trust. Whether it’s addressing somatic symptoms of stress, navigating complex health concerns, or creating inclusive spaces where every child feels valued and safe—your work is the heartbeat of a healthy school environment.
We also acknowledge the diverse and interconnected challenges our communities face, and the fear they are currently experiencing. Issues of immigration status, LGBTQ+ identity, race, and socio-economic disparities deeply impact the children and families we serve. It is through your compassion and dedication that schools become safe havens where this diversity is met with understanding, equity, care and belonging.
As the American Academy of Pediatrics emphasized in their recent statement, policies that undermine the health and well-being of children—such as family separations or barriers to education—create toxic stress that impacts short- and long-term health. Schools must remain a safe haven where children can access the care, education, and support they need without fear.
As leaders in health and education, you carry a profound responsibility: to ensure that every child feels seen, supported, and safe. You serve as a compassionate resource for diverse communities. We stand with you as you navigate this responsibility with the expertise and empathy that define our profession.
Let us move forward together, united in our mission to nurture health, foster safety, and build inclusive communities where every child can learn and thrive. As always, NASN will continue to tirelessly advocate for students, families and school nurses based on science and evidence-based practice. NASN is here to support you with resources, advocacy, and the collective strength of our members.
Thank you for all that you do.
