I just took one of the practice exams and have a question that tripped me up.  They asked why we do not screen for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.  Except in PA, we do screen for scoliosis as one of the state requirements for 6th and 7th graders.  The answer is there is little to no evidence  on long-term outcomes for AIS treated in adolescence.   In doing more research to determine if there was a difference between scoliosis and AIS, it appears that 80% of adolescent scoliosis is idiopathic.  So is my state an outlier in mandating scoliosis screening or is there something else in the question I am missing?

Maybe this statement might help you know why many states stopped this recommended school screening a bit of time ago:  https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/uspstf/document/RecommendationStatementFinal/adolescent-idiopathic-scoliosis-screening#:~:text=Children%20and%20adolescents%20are%20usually,with%20or%20without%20scoliometer%20measurement.&text=In%20general%2C%20patients%20with%20a,be%20recommended%20at%20this%20time.   we have not included this in school screening for almost 10 yrs in Mn (from my 'dusty' head recall).... But thank you for the question... Yes, NBCSN test writers will attempt to separate local practice vs national recommendations....

In New Jersey, we still perform a scoliosis screening in 5th and 7th grade.

This issue has been one that I have been involved in for many years. Several states eliminated their requirement for scoliosis screening based on the 2004 USPSTF recommendation. In RI, we were working on legislation to do the same when the new recommendation was issued in 2018. That statement neither supports nor disparages school-based scoliosis screening, which made it more difficult to challenge our current mandate legislatively. Several states continue to mandate the screening.
Thanks, Bea, for pointing out that the NCSN exam is a national exam and when answering questions, we need to think outside local or state-specific rules. From a testing perspective, the exam committee works hard to eliminate any state bias or questions that may have conflicting responses based on location. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Myon.

In our study session review with Dr. Selekman, she advised that when it comes to taking the exam, go with what the Nation is doing, not what your State or school district has written protocols for.
