Let's try another practice test. Which is the correct answer and why, why do you think the others are incorrect?

What should the school nurse recognize as the primary goal for health screenings?

    A. Screenings are state mandates which are part of the school nurse's role

    B. Screenings are a requirement of standard school nurse employment for all schools

    C. Screenings are a normal part of school nurse practice as required by the board of education

    D. Screenings identify student illnesses early enough to prevent or minimize further morbidity

All are true but there can only be one that is more correct than the others.  I choose D.

    D. It is the only answer that identifies a "Goal."

The others define requirements which is not what the question
asked, "Primary goal for health screenings."

    • Primary Prevention-intervening before health effects occur, through.
    • Secondary Prevention-screening to identify diseases in the earliest.
    • Tertiary Prevention-managing disease post diagnosis to slow or stop.

Understanding the stages of prevention helped me to eliminate the other answers to choose D, as the primary goal of screening in the school setting.

    Hi Pat,
Some states do not require screenings, New Hampshire being one. They are only recommended.
Screenings are a normal part of school nurse practice but I do not if they are required by the board of education.
Answer D. is correct, screenings are used to identify illnesses early and to prevent or minimize further morbidity.
Thanks for posting these questions as they are helpful for studying for the NBCSN test!

I want to thank you all for your contributions to the discussion, we can all learn from each other. Providing your reasoning as to why you think an answer is correct is very helpful to others. It also helps you to look at each answer thoughtfully so you don't just pick one.

Sometimes though, no matter how hard we try we can't decide on an answer. Never leave an item blank.  If you can narrow it down to two you have a 50-50 chance of getting it correct. Even if you don't have any idea which choice is the answer, pick one that gives you a 25% chance of getting it correct, better than a 0 chance if you don't choose anything and leave it blank.

Watch for another practice question next week.

    Warm regards,

    Pat

    The correct answer is D.
A is incorrect because states have different individual mandates regarding the role of the school nurse
B is incorrect because again, states have their own school health regulations and screenings may or may not be a part of school board policy. Private schools do not necessarily provide screenings.
C is incorrect because although screenings are valuable and a great way to collect student data, it is up to each state's board of education/district policies regarding screenings.
D is correct as screenings are Tier 2 in the disease prevention ratings.

D It is the only one that is a primary goal.

Why the others are wrong: A not all states B not all employers C - it is not always required

I choose D as the correct answer.

One reason that pointed me towards my answer is that the NCSN test does is a national test and does not ask, or will not have answers that are State specific since requirements and standards vary by state.

The other reason I chose D is because that is the purpose of screenings....to identify any concerns that could cause difficulties or impacts learning down the road.

Greetings all, I choose D for the answer.  Screenings  identify health conditions at an early stage, conditions and symptoms that can be managed for a better quality of life.

I would pick D because it's a goal. A, B and C are all "requirements" (that may or may not be a requirement depending on the state you work in).

D is correct because screenings primarily recognize illnesses and problems that impede learning.

A is incorrect because it speaks of state mandates but some states may differ in the role of the school nurse

B is incorrect because again screenings may not apply to the standard of school nurses  in all states

C is incorrect because the board of education in each state may have different standards of school nursing

I am aware that some states do not require school nurses which would exclude answers A, B, & C.

    D. There are many types of screenings, some mandated and some not. Screening is secondary prevention that if caught early can prevent further progression of a concern if found.
