I’ve been a school nurse for 22 years now and I know that gave me the advantage of experience. I tried to remember specific students that had the conditions that I was studying to help me remember the information. I also do well remembering things if I develop a pneumonic. For example, to remember what foods are to be avoided for Celiac Disease I used the pneumonic BROW (barley, rye, oat, wheat).
The more I could relate the information to one of my students, the easier it was to remember. I also have better recall if I write things down, so I made flash cards as I was reading through the review book and used them to review on my lunch breaks.
When taking all of the quizzes and practice questions, I got in a habit of reading the question all the way through, reading all the answers, and then reading the question one more time before picking an answer. The second read through was to 1)really identify what details in the question were important and 2)review the actual question after the scenario to identify what they were asking for. Practice quizzes and questions were very helpful for me.
I also didn’t second guess any of my answers. I did flag some questions, but ended up not reviewing them before I submitted. It was actually accidental, but once I got the results I realized that it was probably better that I didn’t overthink those questions by going over them again. Just trust yourself to make the “best guess” even when you aren’t sure.
