Welcome to Week #1 of our online NCSN Study Group. My name is Sarah Portle, and I am so honored to be able to take over working with our NCSN Candidates!  I have been a School Nurse for 15 years and an NCSN for 5.  I have had the privilege of working as an SN in Illinois, Florida, and Arizona, and most recently, I was the Program Manager of the Arizona School Nurse Access Program (ASAP), which helped increase the certification of NCSNs in Arizona by 300%! I am so excited to work with you all on your NCSN journey!

Remember to enjoy the process. In the end, you might find that you learned a lot through this refresher course in school nursing practice!

There are two main books that I suggest you have on hand to review during the preparation process:

    1. Selekman/Cogan School Nursing Certification Review book 3rd Edition Digital (There is a hard copy version available as well).

    2. Selekman, Shannon, and Yonkaitis School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text

Let's start our study group by reviewing the content of Chapters 1 & 2 of the School Nursing Certification Review book and the associated information in Selekman, et al. School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text (Chapters 1-4 and 11-13).

When you have finished reviewing these chapters, please take the assessment at the end of Chapter 2 in the School Nursing Certification Review book.

Review Book Chapter 1 National Certification – The Why and How

This chapter provides general information about the exam including:

    1. Why and How National Certification is Achieved

Please visit our website at www.nbcsn.org for information. You can also find some of this information in the Candidate Handbook (we suggest that you download it for future reference) available at https://www.nbcsn.org/resources/ncsn-handbook/

    Corresponding Selekman, et.al. 3rd ed. School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text Chapters 1 & 2

Review Book Chapter 2 – Foundations of Pediatric Nursing: Understanding Children and Their Families

    1. Growth and Development
    2. Foundations of School Nursing Practice

Corresponding Selekman, et.al. 3rd ed. School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text 3rd Edition Chapters 1-4 and 11-13

This week's assignment: share a reflection on why you decided to pursue national certification with our group.

Additionally, if have any questions about the material, please post them to this dicussion board. The more responses, the richer the discussion! I am here to support the group in any way I can, and I encourage you to reach out to each other as well for support, ideas, and suggestions to create the kind of virtual study group that you need. ** Remember when discussing questions refer to the questions and answers by chapter, number, and letters, eg., Chapter 2 Question 3 Answer B. The information in the review book is copyrighted so you cannot copy the questions and answers to the discussion list. **

Congratulations on taking this important step.  Once you dig into the content, I promise it will be fun and you will feel empowered by taking ownership of the process.  Take the word study out of the equation and substitute it with being curious, we are lifelong learners, it's the nature of a nurse! Keep in touch, and happy learning!

I decided to pursue the certification exam to learn more about my new area of practice. I joined NASN as soon as I started working in School Health. I believe learning everything about your area of practice is "best practice". It was a dream of mine to become a school health nurse and I want to have the knowledge and expertise to take care of any student that comes to the health office. It is totally different than taking care of someone in a hospital.

    Good morning!

I have been wanting to take the NCSN exam since 2020 and have been putting it off. I recently became the district lead nurse for our corporation after being a high school nurse since 2016 and I've found that I have a lot to learn as far as care of the younger student and the legal side of school nursing. I am officially signed up to take the exam on 11/19 and I'm excited and nervous. I'm thankful to have this group and I hope we can all benefit from one another. I haven't studied anything since 1999 when I graduated nursing school, so I feel a little rusty in that area! Hopefully my brain can absorb all that it needs to be successful!

I am excited to be part of this group and take the exam to become nationally certified. I have been a school nurse for students with developmental disabilities for 3 years and absolutely love my job. I look forward to learning and ensuring I am the best school nurse I can be.

Unfortunately, in Rhode Island public school nurses must have a school nurse teacher certification. This is obtained by going to a particular state college for 8 more courses. The costs and time involved are extensive. I hope Rhode Island changes their requirements someday to allow nationally certified school nurses to also work in public schools.

    Hello,

I am also looking forward to this learning experience. Right now, I do not know what the future holds for me, but I am moving forward as if I will sit for the certification this fall.  Learning is always good, and it is better to keep moving forward.

I decided to pursue certification because I want to be the best I can for myself in my field, and also I can't leave out that the money will be nice!

    Good Morning

I am CJ, I live just outside St Louis Missouri, I am a nurse in a school for special needs children. Many of our kids are medically fragile and our clinic can get pretty busy.

I love being with our population of students, seeing their smiles and hearing their voices makes my day.

I have decided to take the NBCSN exam this fall because I want to learn more about different aspects of school nursing beyond my population. I am also starting my MSN in public health in January and I hope that these two will work well together and make me a better, more prepared nurse.

    Test date 11/9/24 (60 days)

Hello! I am Lauren. I work at a small, rural elementary school in NE Arkansas. This is my second year as a school nurse. I decided to take the exam to push myself to be the best I can be for my school. I hope to refresh my knowledge on school nursing while studying for this exam as well as learning how school nursing differs for those in larger school districts/cities.

I have my exam date! 11/19/24 so it is officially official. I knew if I didn't book it, I would put it off. Is there anyone in the group in the Indianapolis area?
