09-29-2022 01:51 PM

Topics and notes from this webinar

  • Maintaining your custom domain: What is this and why is this so important?
    • Must have a domain name registration account with a company like GoDaddy or Network Solutions or any number of other registrar companies.
    • Cost is about $20 per year if you renew in 5-year terms.
    • You need the URL for the company and a username and password to sign into your domain name registration account.
    • Keep the point of contact current in your account so that you receive reminders when the domain is up for renewal.
  • What if you don't know where your domain name is registered?
    • Look it up on the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers or ICANN: https://lookup.icann.org/en
  • When you site goes live, the DNS settings are edited in your domain name registration account. This points web visitors to your site on the NASN web server.
    • Reference: software documentation: https://support.higherlogic.com/hc/en-us/articles/360041357892
      • Create a CNAME record to point www.NEWDOMAIN.org to: nasn.connectedcommunity.org
      • Create a 301 Permanent redirect on the root domain (NEWDOMAIN.org). If this can't be done, create "A" records to point the root domain (NEWDOMAIN.org) to the IP addresses: 34.225.242.50 and 34.193.4.92
  • On NASN's end, we make additional edits in the content management system (CMS) including these:
    • Site Setup > Site Name > Domain Name
    • Admin > Pages > Sites > Domain Settings > Domain Assignments: Set the primary domain
    • Admin > Pages > Sites > Domain Settings > Certificates
    • Admin > Pages > Sites > Domain Settings > Certificate Assignments
  • Site Setup (located in the Site Option menu item visible to website admins only):
    • Site name: Where your copyright statement is updated and where NASN sets your custom domain.
    • Layout: Where you choose the navigation format for you Main Menu Bar, whether to see the Search box on the navigation, and the format for your Footer Content.
    • Images: Where you choose and upload the images for you website's header, Phone screen, Discussion list messages, Favicon and more.
    • Contact Us: What the public will see (address) and what email will receive the contact us form. Review regularly to keep current.
  • The Announcement Widget: A quick review of how this widget works and how it is replacing the previous news widget, which was the blogging widget.
