Welcome to Week #1 of our online NCSN Study Group.  Here is a little study group humor to set the tone for our group because we also need to have some fun.

Remember to enjoy the process. In the end, you might just find that you learned a lot through this refresher course in school nursing practice!  To begin this process, it's suggested to start with the Selekman/Cogan School Nursing Certification Review book 3rd Edition Digital and there is a hard copy version available as well.

Selekman, Shannon, and Yonkaitis School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text is an important resource to help prepare for the exam as well. The 3rd edition was released last summer.

Let's start our study group by reviewing the content of Chapters 1 & 2 of the School Nursing Certification Review book. One idea that worked for me and others I have spoken with is to take the assessment at the end of the chapter first, and then while reviewing the content, pay extra attention to the sections where you missed the mark.  Just so you are not alarmed, there is no assessment for Chapter 1, but please do the assessment for Chapter 2 this week.

In addition to the information in the review book, you might want to review the Selekman, Shannon, and Yonkaitis School nursing: a comprehensive text textbook and/or NASN's White Papers on the specific topics.

Assignment for Week #1: Review Chapters 1 and 2
in the Selekman, Cogan review book.

Review Book Chapter 1 National Certification – The Why and How

This chapter provides general information about the exam including:

    1. Why and How National Certification is Achieved

Please visit our website at www.nbcsn.org for information. You can also find some of this information in the Candidate Handbook (we suggest that you download it for future reference) available at https://www.nbcsn.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/nbcsn-handbook-2020-v1-2-2020.pdf.

    Corresponding Selekman, et.al. 3rd ed. School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text Chapters 1 & 2

Review Book Chapter 2 – Foundations of Pediatric Nursing: Understanding Children and Their Families

    1. Growth and Development
    2. Foundations of School Nursing Practice

Corresponding Selekman, et.al. 3rd ed. School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text 3rd Edition Chapters 1-4 and 11-13

This week's assignment: share a reflection on why you decided to pursue national certification with our group.  If you have any questions about the material, please post them to the list. The more responses, the richer the discussion! I am here to support the group in any way I can, and I encourage you to reach out to each other as well for support, ideas, and suggestions to create the kind of virtual study group that you need. Remember when discussing questions refer to the questions and answers by chapter, number, and letters, eg., Chapter 2 Question 3 Answer B. The information in the review book is copyrighted so you cannot copy the questions and answers to the discussion list.

Congratulations on taking this important step.  Once you dig into the content, I promise it will be fun and you will feel really empowered by taking ownership of the process.  Take the word study out of the equation and substitute it with being curious, we are lifelong learners, it's the nature of a nurse! Keep in touch, and happy learning!

I am pursuing national credentialing because I am new(er) to school nursing and I believe I will be able to gain valuable knowledge with the process of credentialing. i.e. this study group! Drawing different points of view from a pool of nurses across the nation is a fantastic bonus! I look forward to this process and thank you for providing this opportunity!

Hello everyone! I am pursuing National Certification for a few reasons. The first being that I would like to expand my knowledge base. While this information in not 'new' I feel like there was so much detail that I missed a lot the first time around. With a better understanding of school nursing now that I have worked as one for 5 years I think I will come across information that will have more meaning to me this time around. As mentioned previously, I am a lifelong learner and just finished my Master's...I needed something else to strive for next! Lastly, as a newer school employee I have had to keep up with a second job so I am hopeful that when I completed the National Certification I can focus on one job for the remainder of my career. Good luck to all!!

Hello all! I am pursuing national certification, like Erin, to expand my knowledge base. I have been a school nurse for 13 years and in pediatric nursing since I started my career 35 years ago (yikes!). There is always something new to learn and having my certification will give me a personal satisfaction. Does any of your school districts give you any increase in pay for being certified?

    Good morning,
I passed my certification test in August. I read the review book in its entirety, and I made note cards for the information that was unfamiliar to me. I also answered the questions before reading the chapter, then again after reading it. I wish everyone the best of luck and an awesome school year! Thanks for everything!

    Hello everyone,

I have been a school nurse for over six years, last year I was promoted to district coordinator and wish to lead by example, while expanding my knowledge. I have a strong background in adult/cardiac nursing which I practiced for over 25 years (and gerontological certification) but pediatric nursing is not my strongest asset. I have purchased the study book and read it once already, but I believe studying in a group will be a great motivator for me. Looking forward to a new experience.

I am starting my 8th year of school nursing and decided to pursue my national certification this year for a few reasons. I feel like going into my 8th year,  I have been a nurse in the school setting long enough to have a good background and understanding of the job and everything that it entails. I was previously doing nursing in the hospital setting on a medical/oncology floor for 11 years prior to getting into school nursing. In our district I have been there the longest and am the most experienced in school nursing out of my other co workers and wanted to refresh and enhance my knowledge base. Setting a goal and timeline by taking the nation certification exam felt like the motivation I needed to do that. They are looking at restructuring in our district next year and there is supposed to be a health services coordinator position that oversees the district and feel like having my nation certification would be beneficial if I decide to pursue that position. In order to prepare for the exam, I am reading through a few books including the review book, the school nursing comprehensive text, the legal book for school nursing and a book about testing strategies and the NBSCN exam secret study guide as well as participating in this study group.

Hi everyone! It is wonderful to virtually meet you and to read all of your messages about why you are seeking NCSN, the credential that marks excellence in school nursing.
It will be a very productive 7 weeks! Enjoy the process, here are some tips for success in studying and test-taking:

    - Be endlessly curious!
    - Before you dive into the material, review the test questions at the end of each chapter, and then pay extra attention to areas where you may have missed the mark.
    - You are not a test score, you are a professional school nurse, so no matter the outcome of the test, congratulations on taking this important step!
    - Answer the question being asked, don't add to the question. Read it fully as well as the choices provided before you answer.
    - Think nationally versus locally, this test is based on broader school nursing practice, not state or local.
    - HAVE FUN! Stay connected and ask questions to our community.

Thank you so much for providing this support! I practiced pediatric nursing in a hospital setting for 35 years and absolutely loved it. When I was led to a small rural area in another state, I began school nursing. I have totally fallen in love with it, and I crave learning more about it. I am taking the exam, because I want to be the best I can be for these underprivileged children and their families.

I have lived and worked in my rural northeast Florida county my entire life. I joined this group in hopes of expanding my knowledge base and serve my community in the best way possible. I hope to take my certification test next year. I am looking forward to learning from everyone in the group.

Hello! I am pursuing national credentialing for several reasons.  First being to build on the knowledge I have received in my 5 years of being a school nurse.  Second, to teach my boys that is important to always continue to learn and to strive to be better than the day before.  And third, my district compensates for NCSN so if I can learn and get paid more... why wouldn't I?!

My plan is to use the study book, purchase the additional practice tests and utilize this group to help me achieve success!

I've been a Certified School Nurse since 2019 and decided to pursue national certification to enrich my education that I received from obtaining my CSN, and to further my knowledge on best practices in school nursing. To study, I am using the School Nurse textbook, the online study book, and this group discussion. I appreciate the advice and insight on how to successfully study for the exam. I haven't signed up for a date yet, because I'm not sure if I want to try to test remotely or go downtown. I look forward to learning!
