Welcome to Week #1 of our online NCSN Study Group.  Here is a little study group humor to set the tone for our group because we also need to have some fun.

Remember to enjoy the process. In the end, you might just find that you learned a lot through this refresher course in school nursing practice!  To begin this process, it's suggested to start with the Selekman/Cogan School Nursing Certification Review book 3rd Edition Digital and there is a hard copy version available as well.

Selekman, Shannon, and Yonkaitis School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text is an important resource to help prepare for the exam as well. The 3rd edition was released last summer.

Let's start our study group by reviewing the content of Chapters 1 & 2 of the School Nursing Certification Review book. One idea that worked for me and others I have spoken with is to take the assessment at the end of the chapter first, and then while reviewing the content, pay extra attention to the sections where you missed the mark.  Just so you are not alarmed, there is no assessment for Chapter 1, but please do the assessment for Chapter 2 this week.

In addition to the information in the review book, you might want to review the Selekman, Shannon, and Yonkaitis School nursing: a comprehensive text textbook and/or NASN's White Papers on the specific topics.

Assignment for Week #1: Review Chapters 1 and 2
in the Selekman, Cogan review book.

Review Book Chapter 1 National Certification – The Why and How

This chapter provides general information about the exam including:

    1. Why and How National Certification is Achieved

Please visit our website at www.nbcsn.org for information. You can also find some of this information in the Candidate Handbook (we suggest that you download it for future reference) available at https://www.nbcsn.org/resources/ncsn-handbook/

    Corresponding Selekman, et.al. 3rd ed. School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text Chapters 1 & 2

Review Book Chapter 2 – Foundations of Pediatric Nursing: Understanding Children and Their Families

    1. Growth and Development
    2. Foundations of School Nursing Practice

Corresponding Selekman, et.al. 3rd ed. School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text 3rd Edition Chapters 1-4 and 11-13

This week's assignment: share a reflection on why you decided to pursue national certification with our group.  If you have any questions about the material, please post them to the list. The more responses, the richer the discussion! I am here to support the group in any way I can, and I encourage you to reach out to each other as well for support, ideas, and suggestions to create the kind of virtual study group that you need. Remember when discussing questions refer to the questions and answers by chapter, number, and letters, eg., Chapter 2 Question 3 Answer B. The information in the review book is copyrighted so you cannot copy the questions and answers to the discussion list.

Congratulations on taking this important step.  Once you dig into the content, I promise it will be fun and you will feel really empowered by taking ownership of the process.  Take the word study out of the equation and substitute it with being curious, we are lifelong learners, it's the nature of a nurse! Keep in touch, and happy learning!

    Hello,
I am in the process of finishing my BSN and will be done by March. This is honestly my next goal. I am not sure if the next testing cycle is when I will take my exam and sadly it will not change anything where I work but it is my goal to be a NCSN. I look forward to  studying and enhancing my school nurse knowledge base and meeting all of you as well.

    Hi ,
I have the School Nursing Certification Review book from Selekman and Wolfe. Is this book okay to use in place of the one from Selekman and Cogan? Please let me know.
    Thank you

I really would not recommend that you use that. Depending on which edition you have it is at least 13 years old, school nursing practice has changed dramatically in that time. Also if there is any discussion about the questions, they will be different questions. Another huge improvement on the new book is that there is rationale for the answers in the new book, which is not available in the old book.

If approved, you will get an Authorization to Test (ATT email with instructions on how to schedule your exam. I've been a school nurse for 5 years and am ready to pursue my national certification for multiple reasons, but mainly to continue to learn and advance my knowledge to better serve my students. I have already started the e-course through NBCSN and purchased the review book and flash cards, as well as created a huge study calendar to keep me on track! Looking forward to the discussions and homework prompts in this group to keep me on track and motivated. =)

I love the attitude of being curious and a life long learner. I am taking the test TBH because my school nurse grant is funding it.  The study guide is pricey and taking the exam is pricey. School nurses do not make as much as hospital nurses to be honest.  If this enriches my school nursing practice along the way - it was all worth it.

Teri, there is no way for us to know how many questions of any type will be on the exam. Those of us involved in Test Prep, cannot be involved in Test Development either currently or in the past three years. If you haven't downloaded the handbook, I recommend that you (and everyone else) do so  https://www.nbcsn.org/resources/ncsn-handbook/. On page 17 of the Handbook, you will see what we call the Test Blueprint and it will give you an idea of what topics may be included in the exam.  You will see that the Test Plan indicates that there will be a certain percentage of each category of questions will be on the exam.  This Test Plan is in place for 5 years until a new Job Task Analysis (JTA) is completed.  NBCSN will be doing a new JTA this year.

You will notice that it does not particularly list physical assessments or psychological development, but don't we use those skills every day? They are embedded in the assessment of every child as they are walking in the door to our office. How is their demeanor, are they presenting appropriately as to age, do they appear to be in pain, are they laughing with the buddy who came in with them? So there may be questions on the exam related to these things.

All test forms have different questions. 25 pretest questions are the same on every form in a particular year, as well as a number of what we call equator questions that are the same on each form in a particular year, but only the testing company and the small group of subject matter experts who put the exam together, know what questions are on the exam.

So probably way more than you wanted to know, but follow the Certification Review Book and you should be in pretty good shape. Research what you get incorrect or don't feel comfortable with, and become comfortable with the ages and grades you don't work with. Remember, this is a national test, local norms do not count. Special Health Issues and Professional Issues seem to be the place where a lot of people have trouble.

I hope this was helpful. I know it was wordy.

    Regards,

Good morning and thank you for putting this group together.  As an inpatient pediatric nurse, I worried about not passing the national certification exam for Pediatrics.  This hesitation stemmed from a monetary sense and poor test taking skills.  After completing my School Nurse Certificate it gave me the confidence to succeed as a student/learner.  In turn, entering my third year as School Nurse, I decided to pursue national certification to gain a broader knowledge and understanding of all aspects of School Nursing.  Good luck to all of you and I look forward to our correspondence.

I am in my sixth year full time as a school nurse with one extra year added on additionally as a sub/part time nurse!  I am a former middle school teacher from ages ago and really have found my niche as a middle school nurse!  I got my BSN in 2017 and with all of my own kids heading off to college recently, I have the education itch again.  I am doing my NCSN exam to challenge myself and get me motivated to then go for my MSN Education.

Chapter 1 is a good review of why this is important.  Chapter 2 is a good review, when I took the practice test, I missed one, and it was an elementary level question!  Reminds me I need to study that age level a bit more!

    Have a wonderful week!

    Thank you

This week's assignment: share a reflection on why you decided to pursue national certification with our group.  If you have any questions about the material, please post them to the list.

I have wanted to take the exam ever since I became a school nurse about a year and a half ago. School nursing has saved my life by it being my ultimate dream job and tying together every piece of life for me. One quick example is my interactions with the students help me to describe how I am able to tie in what I have learned in my life with my nursing practice to meet the needs of my students. I see results in the way they look at me, listen to me and I love I feel it is easy to spot where they are when I am talking with them as far as understanding what I am saying and if not I quickly am able to get them on my page. When you work from the same page of another, and then add in a factor of the other being a child, there is a sense of complete belonging. God has guided me so heavily, even in my complete lack of faith of believing at all in God.

I am not sure if I will take the exam soon, but I do know that I feel I am in the right place right now, sharing with all of you something that you also get to experience, and that is pretty cool if you ask me:)

Thank you for putting this together. Some of us nurses in our district are going to use the school health grant fund to take the exam. We have been thinking about it for some time, and this was a great opportunity for us to take the exam with grant funds.

NBCSN is thrilled with the number of states that have grant funding being used for the exam.  I think school nursing may be on the way to the recognition it has deserved for many years.

Good morning all! My name is Krista Jackson and I am finishing my second year as a school nurse, after 13 in the inpatient setting in peds/mother-baby/NICU. I have been a Certified Pediatric Nurse for 12 years and feel that national certification is such an important step to take in any specialty to educate and challenge yourself, pushing yourself to be better than before. Not only does this benefit the profession, but ultimately our students and the communities we serve as well. This certification is not required or paid for by my school, but it's important to me professionally and personally to try to achieve.

The CPN exam was significantly different than the NCSN, so I am certainly feeling the nerves. I am joining this study group now, but plan to take the exam during the summer session.

I look forward to learning more with you all over the next few weeks.

Krista, I also wrote the Certification Review book for the Certified Pediatric Nurse exam. There is a great deal of overlap. If you took that exam, you are already part way there, especially related to growth and development.

If it helps any of you, I was EXTREMELY nervous when I took the exam. I even went out of state so that no one would know me. The only thing I had was the first edition of School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text; there was nothing yet for this exam. You can do it. Just take your time and go one question at a time. Focus on the ages and conditions NOT in your school. We are here to help.

One pitfall I have encountered when answering the questions is answering based on my experiences as a school nurse in the tiny rural school I work in. I became "enmeshed"  in the question instead of general best practice. I need to review G & D for sure. Need to dust off my test taking skills. Also, wondering if the nursebuilders study prep e-course would be worth the money. Thanks for this study group. I am learning a great deal while studying - so it is all worth it!

I will mention again the NurseBuilders video https://ecourses.nursebuilders.net/courses/Nursing-Certification-Exam-Preparation-Studying-Anxiety-Management-Test-Taking-Techniques it is only $!0, 50 minutes long and touches on all the information you need. I specifically asked NurseBuilders to put together this course. I have viewed it and it is well worth the $10 and 50 minutes.

Also please check out our Exam Prep pages. https://www.nbcsn.org/ncsn/the-exam/exam-prep/, https://www.nbcsn.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/NBCSN-Suggested-Resources-APA-10-3-2020.pdf, and https://www.nbcsn.org/challenge-the-school-nurse-3/.

The last link is the archived Challenge the School Nurse Questions, many free questions that you can use to practice.

Thank you for all the discussion, this seems like a great group, keep the discussion going.  If you have a question, that means someone else does also.  Don't be afraid to ask.

    Hi everyone!
I am a school nurse in Westchester County, NY, about 25 miles north of NYC.  I have been a registered nurse for 26 years, and have always worked in pediatrics in some form.  I have been a school nurse for the past 4 years at the high school in my town where my children both graduated from (me and my husband too!) and I love working there.  I am also the lead nurse for my district.  I am pursuing certification because I love to learn and I want to be the best school nurse I can be for my students and colleagues.

My name is Tina and I have been a school nurse for 10yrs now at the elementary level. I am taking the national certification for two reasons. First, to further my education and practice. Secondly, to fulfill the DESE requirements for my employment. My 52 yo menopausal brain is not functioning as it did back in college so I am quite anxious to take this exam. I am very thankful to be part of this study group for support!!

    Hi Everyone,

I feel the same way as Tina. I have worked as a pediatric nurse for over 22 years and 7 years as a school nurse. There is a lot of information and experience stored in my middle-aged brain. My concerns are the new policies and interventions implemented for school-age students. How updated is the exam from the certification exam? I saw the handbook was updated in July 2022.

First of all, if you have anxiety about the exam, or haven't tested in many years I would suggest that you purchase (for $10) the NurseBuilders Exam Prep, Studying, Anxiety Management, Test Taking Techniques video.
    Download the Handbook
and check out the test blueprint. It gives you all areas of the information that is tested.

Thank you for this link, Ms. Pat Krin.  I have signed up. I have flashcards and have taken practice tests #1 and #2 on the NBCSN website to prepare for my test date.  Taking this exam will test my courage in overcoming my test-taking anxieties.  I received my MSN in Public Health and the thought of taking a 200 questions exam is more stressful. Thanks again for your help.

Regarding the question about how current the exam and Certification Review book are....
Once the content outline for the exam was determined by NBCSN, Robin and I revised the Certification Review Book. While we do NOT write the questions on the exam (or have access to them), we then revised the book. It is current. Remember that there are always questions on the exam that are being pre-tested for future exams and will not count towards your score; these may be more current. While COVID may not be on the exam yet, school nurses are always responsible for assessing for infectious diseases and implementing school protocols to prevent spread.

Thanks Jan for that helpful information. NBCSN is required to do a Job Task Analysis every five years. We will be doing it this year.
That process helps us determine the knowledge, skills, and abilities that school nurses use and that will help the exam committee write the questions (or maintain the questions) for the exam. We send the survey to both certified and non certified school nurses. If you are asked to complete the survey please do. Your voice is important. It will be a while before it comes out, but management has already met with the testing company to start the process.

Hello everyone.  I am a bit behind and catching up on the threads and posts.  My name is Melissa.  I have been a nurse for 25 years and a school nurse for 5.  I recently obtained certification in my district as an emergency when one of our CSNs did not return from maternity leave.  Since then, I have finished my certification and also my MEd.  I enjoyed learning and thought I had this free time now that I was done with school...so I signed up for the NBCSN.  I will test at the end of March.
