Welcome to Week #1 of our online NCSN Study Group.  Here is a little study group humor to set the tone for our group because we also need to have some fun.

Remember to enjoy the process. In the end, you might just find that you learned a lot through this refresher course in school nursing practice!  To begin this process, it's suggested to start with the Selekman/Cogan School Nursing Certification Review book 3rd Edition Digital and there is a hard copy version available as well.

Selekman, Shannon, and Yonkaitis School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text is an important resource to help prepare for the exam as well. The 3rd edition was released last summer.

Let's start our study group by reviewing the content of Chapters 1 & 2 of the School Nursing Certification Review book. One idea that worked for me and others I have spoken with is to take the assessment at the end of the chapter first, and then while reviewing the content, pay extra attention to the sections where you missed the mark.  Just so you are not alarmed, there is no assessment for Chapter 1, but please do the assessment for Chapter 2 this week.

In addition to the information in the review book, you might want to review the Selekman, Shannon, and Yonkaitis School nursing: a comprehensive text textbook and/or NASN's White Papers on the specific topics.

Assignment for Week #1: Review Chapters 1 and 2
in the Selekman, Cogan review book.

Review Book Chapter 1 National Certification – The Why and How

This chapter provides general information about the exam including:

    1. Why and How National Certification is Achieved

Please visit our website at www.nbcsn.org for information. You can also find some of this information in the Candidate Handbook (we suggest that you download it for future reference) available at https://www.nbcsn.org/resources/ncsn-handbook/

    Corresponding Selekman, et.al. 3rd ed. School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text Chapters 1 & 2

Review Book Chapter 2 – Foundations of Pediatric Nursing: Understanding Children and Their Families

    1. Growth and Development
    2. Foundations of School Nursing Practice

Corresponding Selekman, et.al. 3rd ed. School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text 3rd Edition Chapters 1-4 and 11-13

This week's assignment: share a reflection on why you decided to pursue national certification with our group.  If you have any questions about the material, please post them to the list. The more responses, the richer the discussion! I am here to support the group in any way I can, and I encourage you to reach out to each other as well for support, ideas, and suggestions to create the kind of virtual study group that you need. Remember when discussing questions refer to the questions and answers by chapter, number, and letters, eg., Chapter 2 Question 3 Answer B. The information in the review book is copyrighted so you cannot copy the questions and answers to the discussion list.

Congratulations on taking this important step.  Once you dig into the content, I promise it will be fun and you will feel really empowered by taking ownership of the process.  Take the word study out of the equation and substitute it with being curious, we are lifelong learners, it's the nature of a nurse! Keep in touch, and happy learning!

    Good Morning Everyone!

I'm excited to be starting this study group. I decided to sign up for this group because I took the exam last fall and missed it by TWO points :(. I was given a chance to be part of a group of 50 nurses in my state to take the certification and be reimbursed for the testing fee (our state is really trying to show how important school nursing is, and encourage furthering education). Unfortunately I signed up and only had a few weeks to study before my test. I wasn't going to take it again but I know I can do it, so here I am! I'm excited to connect with other nurses across the country and see what I can learn from everyone.

    Happy Friday!

    Good Morning.
If I am honest I am very nervous about taking the test! I took it about 8 years ago and didn't pass. A month before the test the school district I worked for layed off a bunch of teachers and myself to save money. At the time I had no idea if I was going to get a job in school nursing or not. I had stopped studying and was in a bad place but since I already paid for the test I took it and failed. It has taken me this long to get up the nerve to try again. I have no support at work and am doing this all on my own to prove to myself that "I am good at my job!"
I really need the support and help to pass this test, which is why  I joined this group.
I'm looking forward to meeting other nurses and working hard to pass this test.
Only 12 more student days to go!

    Hello Fellow School Nurses,
I have been working as a school nurse for a little over a year and a half. I have been a pediatric nurse for 10 years and passed my PNP-PC boards two years ago. I decided on school nursing because this is the best schedule for my family as a single mother.  I worked as a pediatric home care nurse for about 6 years, and when I transitioned into school nursing I actually had a lot of chronic kiddos I would follow at school and at home. It is nice to connect with these families and truly make a difference. I am pursuing my National School Certification to enhance my knowledge and skill level while caring for these children in the school setting. I am looking forward to this review course and what it has to offer.

Getting started a bit late, but started nevertheless! I have only been working as a school nurse (PreK-2nd grade) since mid-September 2022 and have much to learn. My background is Primary care, ED and Health coaching/Diabetes. Certification is a requirement for my position within 3 years of hire date, but I'm planning to take the exam in the Fall of this year (fingers crossed). I do better with a plan and accountability from others. This group has already shown to be encouraging and it helps to know others have the same fears around taking the exam. I look forward to getting started! I remember doing something similar when I prepped for the NCLEX over 18 years ago! We finish the school year in 6.5 more days!

For those of you who are expressing (or feeling) anxiety about this test, I suggest that you invest $10 and one hour of your time on the NurseBuilders program Nursing Certification Exam Preparation Studying, Anxiety Management, Test Taking Techniques . This program was developed at my request and I think you will find it very helpful.

Well, I feel like an ole pro I guess.  This will be my 3rd time to take the test.  Each time before I missed the mark by 2-4 points :-(  I figure 3rd time is the charm (or at least I'm hoping).  I have been school nursing for 8 years now.  Surely, I have learned some things over that time.......

I am very nervous about taking this exam and want to be as prepared as possible which is why I am very grateful for this study group. I have not registered for the test yet but plan on taking it this summer! I can't wait to meet other nurses through this group! Good luck everyone!

My name is Caroline Chambers and this is my 7th year working as a school nurse.  I was hoping to take the exam in 2020 but the grandfather rule for ADN's changed and I was not able to apply.  I recently finished my BSN degree and hope to take the certification exam in the fall. My goal is to gain as much knowledge as I can to incorporate best practices in my clinic and have greater outcomes for my students.  Good luck to you all and look forward to this study time together! 3 more regular school days and then summer school !!

    Good Morning,
I have been a school nurse for over 17 years and I have always thought about taking the National School Nurse Certification test. Some of my colleagues here in New Hampshire have taken it and passed. I am feeling positive about taking this test! This study group will be a great asset to the overall experience. I have been taking the practice exams and I am currently watching the nurse builder review course.
By passing the exam, it will prove to me that I have the knowledge to be working in the field of nursing that I have loved for many years. I have 2 new nurses in my school district and I enjoy mentoring them.
Another motivator for taking the exam is that my school district gives a $2,500 yearly stipend to staff who are nationally certified!
Looking forward to learning with all of you!

    Hi all,

I am so happy to be part of this group. I will be honest I took this exam last summer & failed! I was so disappointed in myself & having to tell my children I failed was humbling & so SAD!!!! LOL! But I am back & trying again. I'm not planning on failing again, but if by chance I do does anyone know if I can take it again in the same window? If I sign up for July 6th and fail, could I take it again end of July or August 1? Let me tell you, nobody will know I'm taking it this time, not even my kids! ;) but when I pass you better believe they will know then.
I know this group will be a big help & I will have more time to study when school gets out in 12 days.
Thanks for the support. Let's have fun in here & help each other succeed. God knows we all know how to be a nurse it's the test taking anxiety that we all need to work on.
    Let's do this!

    Warmly,

    Hello everyone,
My name is Sandey Stayanoff and I am an American RN living and working in North Macedonia (just above Greece). I am in my 16th year of school nursing and i have lived and worked as a school nurse in Panama, Japan, and now North Macedonia. I have 2 MSN degrees - one in Nursing Education and one in School Nursing. I decided to pursue the certification because I want to teach school nurses online and those extra initials after my name would really help! I am amazed at how much I have to learn! I thought having 16 years of school nursing under my belt would make it a little easier - oh my goodness!! I am taking the exam on July 6.
I am so grateful for this study group. I also have the certification review textbook, plus I am taking the e-course which is really helpful, plus   Selekman's comprehensive school nurse text book. I also have the two practice exams and have taken them multiple times. These tests zeroed in on the areas in which I have a knowledge gap, so that has also been helpful.
Good luck everyone and I am grateful you are here.

I am truly impressed by your accomplishments! How were you able to obtain work visa for a school nurse position abroad? I have been searching for positions online, but without EU passport or work permit I am out of luck.
Good luck on your test! I am going to take mine in August. I am actually enjoying studying for it because I find the information really useful and interesting.

Hi Tatiana and thanks for your message. I do love being an international school nurse and I think you would love it too!
The key is finding a school who has an available position for a school nurse. When the school hires you (international schools love American RNs!) they will provide you with the work visa, and all the necessary documents to get into the country. International hires are usually offered a package deal  of benefits which is nice (flight costs, visa costs, housing allowance, etc).
TIE online is a good place to look for school nurse positions.
And PS: My school is hiring a school nurse FT for next year (HINT HINT) because I am retiring from my day job and want to teach online. It was a tough decision, but it's time. My husband retired last year and we have lots of things we want to do.
Good luck on your test, too! You will do great!

    Hi everyone!
I have been a school nurse for 1.5 years at a local high school. Before that, I was a L&D nurse for 6 years. I decided to take the exam to further my education in school nursing and if I am being honest, the pay scale increase. I also am starting a master's degree program next week in nursing education. I am hoping I am not doing too much at once. I took one of the review class that Janice Selekman did in April and it was great. I definitely learned a lot. I signed up to take my test in July at a testing facility after reading everyone's comments about taking tests at home. I feel like I would be able to focus more at a facility.

Hi everyone, It is wonderful to see all of the engagement in Week #1 of our online study group. Sharing your experiences, concerns, and most importantly goals for studying for the upcoming exam is an important part of a successful outcome. I do have to say that this is a test, and for those who may have missed the mark by a few points, I congratulate you for coming back to try again. We all know that test anxiety is real, we see it in our students, after all, and we are not immune to it either. But this is one test, your dedication to your school nursing practice stands on its own merits as well. Please study and prepare, but be gentle with yourselves, especially those who are returning after a disappointing outcome. Give yourself grace, we give it to others so freely, but we need it as well.

I found that taking the practice tests at the end of each chapter first, helped me identify areas where I needed additional focus in my studies for the exam. I also had to be very mindful about reading the questions too fast and then deciding on the answer before I really understood what was being asked. SLOOWWW it down when it comes to reviewing the questions, be sure you know what is being asked, and then read the choices carefully. I found that my brain was working far faster than I was grasping the information and I was jumping to conclusions.  Here are some other suggestions that you may want to keep in mind:

    1. Start preparing early: Give yourself ample time to study and review the exam content. Starting early can help alleviate some of the stress associated with last-minute cramming.

    2. Create a study plan: Develop a structured study plan that outlines what topics you need to cover and when you will study them. Breaking down the material into manageable chunks can make studying more manageable and reduce feelings of overwhelm. Which is what we hope this weekly schedule will provide for you.

    3. Familiarize yourself with the exam format: Get to know the structure and format of the NCSN exam. Understanding how many questions there are, how they are organized, and the time limit can help you feel more prepared and less anxious on exam day. There is lots of information on the website and Pat Krin is a wealth of knowledge about the test and often adds to our conversations. In fact, she already has responded!

    4. Practice with questions at the back of each chapter. Consider using the other test preparation materials that are listed on the NBCSN website.: Regularly practicing with these questions can boost your confidence and familiarize you with the types of questions you may encounter. We will be including multiple choice questions throughout the weeks of this study group.

    5. Use relaxation techniques: Incorporate relaxation techniques into your study routine to manage test anxiety. Deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness strategies can help calm your mind and body.

    6. Visualize success: Create a mental image of yourself successfully completing the NCSN exam and using those initials after your name and degrees earned. Visualize yourself confidently answering questions and achieving a positive outcome. This positive visualization can help reduce anxiety and boost your self-belief.

    7. Seek support: Reach out to fellow school nurses who have taken the NCSN exam and continue to contribute to our study group to share your experiences and gain insights. Having a support system can provide encouragement and a sense of camaraderie.

    8. Practice self-care: Prioritize self-care leading up to the exam. Get enough sleep, maintain a healthy diet, engage in regular physical activity, and take breaks during study sessions. Taking care of your overall well-being can help reduce anxiety and enhance your focus and concentration.

    9. Challenge negative thoughts: Replace negative self-talk and doubts with positive affirmations. Remind yourself of your knowledge, skills, and experience as a school nurse. Affirmations such as "I am well-prepared" and "I can handle this exam" can help boost your confidence.

    10. Stay positive and maintain perspective: Remember that test anxiety is a common experience, and you are not alone in feeling this way. Focus on your progress, effort, and the valuable knowledge you have gained throughout your preparation.

It's important to remember that test anxiety is manageable, and these strategies can help you navigate the NCSN exam with greater confidence. Believe in yourself and your abilities as a school nurse. Stay in touch and connected, it will help!

    Hi everyone!

I am a middle school RN. I have been a nurse for 18 years. I did 4 years elementary , left for a while and just came back to school nursing in August. I want to be certified for many reasons. Mostly-  have been certified in another specialty and the sense of accomplishment felt good and it helped me be prepared for the population I served. Also in NC it is required and lasltly in my district there is a financial incentive as well.

Sarah, I completely agree. I was also certified in another specialty and I was very proud of those extra initials after my name. I think it is great that we are doing this.

Joining a study group with other nurses to pursue my National Certification is like adding a dose of humor to my nursing journey! This group is like a comedy club where we can ask questions, share knowledge, and receive laughter-filled encouragement. I've been putting off taking this test, but now I feel like studying together will make it a hilarious adventure of deepening understanding, boosting motivation, and enhancing accountability. I can't wait to achieve my certification and become the funniest nurse in town! Taking my exam this July.

    Hello,
My name is Beverly and working in schools as a nurse was my first job out of nursing school as a "health assistant". I loved it but thought I really need to get into a hospital for real experience as a nurse. It never happened yall and it has been 12 years. I wanted to challenge myself by increasing my knowledge and understanding and providing the best care to children. Also, I figured I could stand to have that extra N placed in front of CSN.

I am scheduled for the test on July 14th. Happy studying!!

    Hello,
My name is Maria Carbonell and this is my 5th year as a school nurse. Previously, I was working as an LVN. I love school nursing because I get to work with children and their families. I recently finished my MSN and decided maybe the next step is to get the National Certification. I work for a school district in the Sacramento area in CA. I haven't decided yet but I think I will be testing in the Fall to have enough time to prepare myself. Good luck to everyone.

Good Afternoon! I joined a little late but I'm excited to have this group to help me study. I have been a pediatric nurse for 25 years and a school nurse for 6. While certification is required for my position, it's been a goal of mine since I started. Thank you for this group!
