This Week's Assignment - Reflection Prompt

Why are you pursuing national certification?
Please share your response on this week's discussion thread. Reflecting on your "why" helps ground your motivation and builds community.

I pursued certification to ensure I had the most current knowledge and skills to support student well-being. Becoming nationally certified helped me grow both professionally and personally and gave me a network of school nurses equally committed to excellence. It's one of the best decisions I've made in my career.

    Let's Collaborate

Have a question about the content? Post it in the discussion! Refer to questions by chapter, number, and letter (e.g., Chapter 2, Question 4, Answer C).

Please do not copy questions or answers verbatim due to copyright.

Final Thoughts – You've Got This!

As we begin this journey together, remember: you're not alone. Whether this is your first time preparing for a certification exam or a return to formal study, know that this process is a powerful step forward in your professional growth.

This isn't just about passing a test-it's about strengthening your ability to support your students, advocate for health equity, and shine in your role as a leader in school nursing.

You've already taken a big step by showing up. Stay curious, stay committed, and lean on each other throughout this journey. I'm here to support you every step of the way.

You are more than capable. Let's do this, together.

    Hello!

I am SO excited to start this review! I am a relatively new school nurse (this is my second year) and I love it. It has been wonderful to step aside from the bedside and feel like I am making a difference everyday. The biggest reason I am pursuing national certification is to ensure I have all the tools to be successful in my job and fully support my amazing students. Changing to school nursing felt like an uphill battle, but I have found that the more I learn the easier it becomes. This seems like the next logical step after completing my PEL-CSN. I am excited to get started and learn along side all of you!

Are the practice tests the same test as the last exam period.  I have used those alot and dont want to keep taking as I know most of the answers.  This is the second time I am taking the exam.

    Thanks.

The practice exams are basically the same as in 2025. In December, we updated the references, reassigned the domains to match the updated test blueprint, and made editorial changes in a couple of the questions. If you purchased the practice exams last year, there is no need to re-purchase.

Best of luck on the exam!

It's nice to meet you, Sarah! I'm really looking forward to this group and preparing for the exam. I've been an RN since 2011 so it's been a minute since I've taken any tests like this. Is it weird that I'm excited about the studying I'm doing?! Ha!
My Reflection: Like you, Sarah, I want to grow in my nursing knowledge and practice. If I'm going to do this, I want to do it well, and I want to do it right. I was fortunate to work in a large district for some years in a metropolitan area, where things were streamlined and much more in order than they are where I currently am.

But also, I am a mother of kiddos in the school district where I work. We live in one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation, but unfortunately, the mindset of our community and school district has not caught up with the reality of what that growth means. I'll admit, my heart wants to stay in denial that our once small town has grown so much. But I can't ignore the real world for a fantasy...I want our district to have an excellent nursing department for our kids, for my kids, and I'm going to do what I can to make that happen.

    Hello everyone,

I'm looking forward to being part of this group. I have scheduled my test date for April 1, 2026. I have been a school nurse since 2016 and hold a Master's degree in Nursing Education.

In New Jersey, school nurses are required to hold a state school nurse certification, which I currently have. However, earning national certification has always been a personal and professional goal of mine.

I'm excited for the next few weeks of learning, collaboration, and engagement as we study together and support one another in achieving our goals.

I have been a NASN member since my first year of school nursing seven years ago, and I have greatly valued the information-sharing and collaboration within the community forum, as well as the opportunity to learn from nurses across the nation.  I love working with the students and staff and look forward to each day I spend with them.  I am pursuing certification to further enhance my knowledge and skills in this area of nursing so that I can provide the highest level of care to the students, their families, and the staff in my school and throughout my district.

    Hello Sarah and everyone else!

This is a great group. I've enjoyed reading everyone's replies as to why they are choosing to be national certified. Like many of you, I want to expand my knowledge within the speciality of School Nursing so that I can provide the best quality care to the students I take care of within my school. I've always felt like school nursing was my niche.

I've been chugging along as best I can with my reading. In addition to reading, I plan on preparing by taking practice tests and reading the rationales that go along with the answers. I would also like to utilize what is recommended within this group.

Looking forward to our continuation of learning and growing as a nurse!

    Hello,

I have been following along for about a year now. I have decided that 2026 will be the year for certification. I am in my 5th year as a school nurse and still have so much to learn. I thought working in the hospital was difficult but school nursing as its own unique challenges. I have decided to become certified to continue to increase my knowledge of school nursing. As the only health professional in the building I think education lends to the credibility and elevates the school nurse role within the educational systems. Evidence based practice does not end when you leave the bedside in fact it is probably more important. I am so happy to be part of the NASN community it has served as a place to share and learn.

Sarah I appreciate your knowledge and commitment to the specialty of School Nursing.

I am a relatively seasoned school nurse with 5 years of school nursing experience and am currently serving in a School Nurse Administrator role for my region. I have always wanted to get my NCSN but haven't felt prepared enough. Now that I am in this role, I want to make sure that I am as knowledgeable and experienced as possible to help support the school nurses around my region in supporting their students. While I am not planning to take the exam until the summer, I do want to prepare as much as possible. I look forward to study along with this group.

    Happy Monday,

I have been a pediatric nurse for over 20 years, spending the last 10 years working primarily in school nursing. Throughout my career, I have developed a deep commitment to advocating for children's health, supporting families, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure students are able to learn and thrive. Pursuing certification reflects my desire to continue growing professionally, to formally validate the knowledge and experience I have gained.

I see this process as an opportunity not only to strengthen my own practice, but also to better support colleagues, mentor newer nurses, and contribute to high standards of care in the school setting. I am especially looking forward to participating in this discussion group, as collaborative learning and study groups are how I learn best. Engaging with others will help keep me accountable, broaden my perspective, and steer me in the right direction as I prepare for the exam.

    Hello,

I've been thinking about pursuing the National School Nurse Certification for a couple of years now and have finally decided it's time to take this step. I'm currently a district nurse for a school district in Arizona and am in my 10th school year. School nursing is such a unique and specialized role, and this feels like a great way to build on my experience, strengthen my knowledge, and continue growing in the profession. I'm excited to be on this journey and to learn alongside others who are doing the same. Best of luck to everyone pursuing this journey!

Hello! I'm responding a little bit late... But I'm nervous and excited to have a group to turn to as we study for the national exam together. I started school nursing almost three years ago, and wasn't expecting to be as passionate about it as I am! I work at an independent school, and have been employed as their first school nurse in their 100+ year history. It's been so special to create a program that focuses on keeping our students educated, safe and empowered. I want to get certified so I can continue to build this program, and help coach other school nurses who are also navigating programming at independent/private schools, while also having a clear understanding of national standards.
