Welcome to Week #2 of our online study group

  • 1.  Welcome to Week #2 of our online study group

    Posted 01-19-2024 06:00

We are moving full-steam ahead in preparation for the upcoming Spring exam window.  It is energizing to see how many school nurses have joined the group and are
contributing to the ongoing conversation. Thank you to those who have shared your experiences and posted questions. We are off to a great start!

Suggested Reading for Week #2, we are digging deeper into Chapter 2 of the Review book. We introduced it last week, but with so much to absorb, we believe that focusing on this Chapter by itself this week will give you all space to review and get used to the pacing of the online study group. We will not be repeating other chapters, it only happens this week as a way to ease you into setting your study time.

Selekman, Cogan: School Nursing Certification Review book Chapter 2. We give this chapter an extra week of attention because it is the basis of our practice.

Foundations of Pediatric Nursing Children and Their Families

    I  Growth and Development

II Foundations of School Nursing Practice

This comprises 27% of the exam.

Selekman, Shannon and Yonkaitis School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text 3rd Edition Chapters
    1-4 and 11-13:

    1. Foundations of School Nursing Practice Chapters 1-4
    2. Growth and Development Chapters 11-13

Recommended contribution to the group for Week #2:  Doesn't that sound better
    than assignment ;).

Share your outcomes with the group this week.  Comment on what surprised you about the process, what you learned, and what resources you chose to reinforce areas that needed more focused attention. How are you staying motivated this week?

As promised, here are some test-taking tips specifically geared toward multiple-choice
Nursing exam questions! (11 Test-Taking Tips & Strategies For Nurses * Nurseslabs)

    1. Read Questions Carefully
Scores on tests are greatly affected by reading ability. In answering a test item,
you should begin by carefully reading the stem and then asking yourself the
    following questions:
 What is the question really asking?
     Are there any keywords?
 What is information relevant to answering this question included in the stem?
 How would I ask this question in my own words?
 How would I answer this question in my own words?

After you have answered these questions, carefully read the options and then ask
    yourself the following questions:
 Is there an option that is similar to my answer?
 Is this option the best, most complete answer to the question?

Deal with the question as it is stated, without reading anything into it, or
making assumptions about it. Answer the question asked, not the one you would like to
answer. For simple recall items, the self-questioning process usually will be completed
quickly. For more complex items the self-questioning process may take longer, but it
should assist you in clarifying the item and selecting the best response.

    2. Identify Keywords
Certain keywords in the stem, the options, or both should alert you to the need
for caution in choosing your answer. Because few things are absolute without
exception, avoid selecting answers that include words such as always, never, all, every,
only, must, no, except, and none. Answers containing these keywords are rarely correct
because they place special limitations and qualifications on potentially correct answers.

    For example:

All of the following are services of the National Kidney Foundation except:
    1. Public education programs
    2. Research about kidney disease
    3. Fund-raising affairs for research activities
    4. Identification of potential transplant recipients

This stem contains two keywords: all and except. They limit the correct answer choice
to the one option that does not represent a service of the National Kidney Foundation.
When except, not, or a phrase such as all but one of the following appears in the stem,
the inappropriate option is the correct answer in this instance, option 4.
If the options in an item do not seem to make sense because more than one option
is correct, reread the question; you may have missed one of the keywords in the stem.
Also, be on guard when you see one of the keywords in an option; it may limit
the context in which such an option would be correct.

I have purchased the text : Selekman, Cogan: School Nursing Certification Review book.  I am hoping not to purchase the additional textbook (Selekman, Shannon and Yonkaitis School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text 3rd Edition).  In your opinion, will this review text along with the study group be adequate for passing this certification test?

    Hi Joy,

Welcome to the group. Brushing up on test-taking strategies is also important. See how comfortable you feel with the content and then decide if you need additional support. There are some great prep materials on the NBCSN website and NurseBuilders, that I linked in this week's message.

    Hi Everyone!

This is my third attempt at this exam.  So, having sat through 8 hours of exam questions now, I know how the exam looks and what some of the questions are like.  The challenge I face is that I still get tripped up on questions that seem to have more than one correct answer and finding the answer that is "most correct".  It's hard not to feel like they are trying to trick you.  I look forward to learning some test taking strategies and hopefully will be successful in my next attempt at this exam.

I am using the text: Selekman, Cogan: School Nursing Certification Review.

While doing the practice questions for chapter 2, I was a bit thrown by the answer to question number 15. The question can be found on page 35.

"All permanent teeth, with the exception of final molars, should be present by which age?"

    A.9 B.11 C.14 D.18

The correct answer is C. 14 with the rationale being "Most children will have the majority of their permanent teeth around age 12.  Answers a, b, and d do not fall within the typical age range for this milestone."

So my question is, if the correct answer is 12, why not have that as one of the multiple choice answers?

The text refers to this question on page 18.

"All permanent teeth are present by age 12, except for final molars"

I chose B.11 because it was the closest age to 12 and I went the Price is Right route and figured choose the answer closest to the correct number without going over.  How would you recommend strategizing to determine the correct answer here?

    Sorry for spiraling!

Kim, please know that no one is trying to trick you. One of the points of testing is to have you use critical thinking skills. Make sure when you are answering the questions that you read the rationale and that you understand it. Forget the Price is Right!
Think critically if all teeth are in by age 12 and that is not a choice which one of the answers meets that criteria? It must be at least 12 so what is the next highest number?
If you haven't thought about the $10 50 minute program from NurseBuilders you might want to consider it.

I did well on the quiz except on one question whereI made a classic error reading the answer selections.  For Chapter 2, question 24, the correct answer is C, I chose D because I read the selections too fast and completely skipped over the word "shallow" - picking that one because it referred to taking breaths. Now I do admit that I was cooking at the time and was waiting for dinner to be ready so wasn't 100% focused, not to mention it was the 2nd to last question.

I appreciate having the "assigned readings" for each week to help keep me motivated to get to work on this! At first I was discouraged while reading through Erikson and Piaget information at all that I had forgotten. I used to teach this material in depth when I taught pediatric nursing but haven't said some of those terms in YEARS so I found reviewing it in detail was going to be necessary.  However, when I went to take the quiz, I found I could answer most of those type of questions correctly by just thinking about kids that age and what I would expect them to do. I may not know the labels put on those specific age groups but mostly I can identify the behaviors. It made me think of something I read in this group last week that as you go through your daily practice think about why you are doing what you are doing. Those of us with years of experience just do things and we don't even really know why. The background information is in our heads and we use it... we just don't realize we are!! We are out again for snow/ice but my goal is once I'm back with kids to look daily for at least one example of Erikson or Piaget stages in the kids I work with.

    Hi Ardith,

Your plan to purposefully seek out examples of Erikson and/or Piaget's stages through your daily school nurse practice will most certainly solidify the concepts. Sometimes after years of nursing practice, we do things by rote, but it is important to reflect on the how and why. Preparing for the NCSN exam, hopefully through a guided study group like this one, gives structure to purposeful studying. Each week builds on the previous material, especially the test-taking strategies that are part of the weekly messages.

In studying the stages of development, I went back to a strategy that I used to use when I was in nursing school and studying for the original NCLEX exam. I went to good old YouTube and searched the developmental stages. Usually when studying a topic, if you type that topic in, there are loads of videos on the topics from nurses themselves or professionals. For me, it helps to not only read the information, but it also helps me absorb better if I can listen as well. There was a great nurse on there that talked through each stage of development which was so beneficial! I ended up only missing 2 on the practice questions for chapter 2 which was encouraging!

Like Barbara and Ardith said in their posts, its nice to have "assignments" and also extra time to wade through chapter 2. I was feeling kind of discouraged because it is SO MUCH material. I did ok on the practice test - thank goodness for practice tests. I've had a hard time staying motivated to dedicate time to studying, but I know what I need to do to get into the habit again. Once again, I'm so grateful for this study group as a sounding board. Thanks to you all!

Like Ardith, I have a hard time with remembering the age groups with Piaget and Erikson, but then I think of what I do for each kiddo.  I think of our kindergarten screenings and how staff has students cut using scissors, hop, skip, etc and then I relate that to the age they are during that time. When I took the Selekman review, she mentions Little League and then I know that is ages 9-12 and the importance of friendships at this time in life. Very helpful to think of it that way.

Good luck to all...we got this!

    Hi

I am new to school nursing, just completed my second year. I am concern that it may be too soon for the certification. So I will take my time reading and following this group. I am the first full time nurse at my middle school. I will be the one to develop policies and procedures and set goals for a productive school environment.

So I took the practice exam and missed 8! I think for me, I need to think of "ideals" when trying to answer questions. I found I missed questions because I am answering with that I am actually allowed to do rather than what I think the spirit of the question is. I also read in to questions instead of taking them at face value. Going back to read some more.

I have taken the chapter 2 practice test in selekman and cogan review book and I've gotten this question about teaching a kingergarten age child about asthma. It says, "In planning to teach him how" the school nurse should begin by. Well I chose the option with "planning a health lesson" mainly because it seems like the key phrase here seemed to be in the stages of "planning" and the others were in implementation of a plan. The correct answer was Demonstrating proper use and allow the child to return the demonstration. How did others do with that? Even though I know that that would be the best way to teach a child that age, it doesn't seem to be in the "planning" stage so I didn't choose it.

Thanks everyone -- i'll do my best to try to keep up with the pace of the reading!

I have noticed that there are some school nurses, schools, staff that just want temp checks and send kids right back to class. Our district is supposed to be Whole School, Whole Child, Whole Community focused. We are supposed to be 21st century school nurses. I find myself explaining why I don't just "send them back." Just because they are back in their seat doesn't mean they will learn anything. Just a thought after reading this.

I love your wording of "recommended contribution" vs "assignment" it definitely makes the studying feel less like a chore. I took your advice and completed the practice test before reading Chapter 2 and missed 7 questions. I felt much better when after reading and taking notes I only missed 2 on the practice test. I identified a weakness in knowing the correct theories and stages and made a note to circle back to those at a later date. (Unfortunately I haven't had much free time for studying this week.) I also plan to go through the free e-class on test taking strategies over the weekend.
