Here are a few more multiple-choice test-taking strategies taken from 11 Test Taking Tips & Strategies For Nurses * Nurseslabs :

    1. Identify Similar Options

When an item contains two or more options that are similar in meaning, the successful test taker knows that all are correct, in which case it is a poor question, or that none is correct, which is more likely to be the case. The correct option usually will either include all the similar options or exclude them entirely. For example:

When teaching newly diagnosed diabetic clients about their condition, it is important for the nurse to focus on:

    1. Dietary modifications
    2. Use of sugar substitutes
    3. Their present understanding of diabetes
    4. Use of diabetic nutritional exchange lists

Options 1, 2, and 4 deal only with the diabetic diet, involving no other aspect of diabetic teaching; it is impossible to select the most correct option because each represents equally plausible, though limited, answers to the question. Option 3 is the best choice because it is most complete and allows the other three options to be excluded. As another example:

A child's intelligence is influenced by:

    1. A variety of factors
    2. Socioeconomic factors
    3. Heredity and environment
    4. Environment and experience

The most correct answer is option 1. It includes the material covered by the other options, eliminating the need for an impossible choice, since each of the other options is only partially correct.

    1. Identify Answer (Option) Components

When an answer contains two or more parts, you can reduce the number of potentially correct answers by identifying one part as incorrect. For example:

After a cholecystectomy the postoperative diet is usually:

    • High fat, low calorie
    • High fat, low protein
    • Low fat, high calorie
    • Low fat, high protein

You know, for instance, that the diet after cholecystectomy is usually low or moderate in fat, you can eliminate options 1 and 2 from consideration. If you know that the cholecystectomy client usually is overweight, you can eliminate option 3 from consideration. Therefore option 4 is correct.

I just purchased this and am thoroughly enjoying it! I love how she has bolded and underlined items that MAY be on the test.. and listening to someone explain it is way easier in my brain that just reading.

Her quirky humor has had me giggling a few times which always makes learning better.

I bought this too and I so agree. I am making flashcards based on what I am seeing. I can listen to it in the car and I have it playing in my clinic when I have a few minutes here and there. I think it will be greatly helpful. It is expensive, but it does have 10 CEUs and that ultimately helped me decide to buy it. I only want to take this test once!!

    Thank you!

    The nurse builder's course has 10 CEUs.https://ecourses.nursebuilders.net/courses/2022-nationally-certified-school-nurse-ncsn-review-e-course

Click on the link and it will show you details. It is very comprehensive. I think if you can master the content in the nurse builders and our study books, failure will not be an option. Dr. Selekman is a wonderful speaker.

I got 32/44 on the review questions and missed some for such silly reasons!  Number 4.  My seven year old doesn't even have those teeth loose yet, so I just went off what I knew and chose baby tooth lost.  But I missed the word "root" meaning obviously this particular 7 year old already had her adult tooth. Number 30.  I thought further injury from ill fitted crutches or pain would trump axillary pressure, but read too far into that one.  Number 1.  I answered c., but didn't read far enough this time to think that a student in shock wouldn't be able to follow the direction to stabilize the pencil.  Among other silly mistakes answering questions wrong with info that I definitely know.  I'll probably need to buy the review tests since answering questions is going to be a major make or break in being able to pass

    For the question:

The role of the school nurse relative to safety would involve:

Why is A the best answer?

Assessing school environment for safety risk factors and making recommendations.

I'm not understanding the rationale. Answer D - Monitoring Immunization compliance speaks to a healthy school environment too..

    Thanks

So answer A would include D so it is the better answer.

Use words wisely. It is not asking about a healthy environment it is asking about a safe environment.

I need help on Cht 4 question 26  Insulin dependant collapses in the hall.  Sitting up when you arrive.  First action is to:  Answer is D Give fast acting carbs.  I answered B Check BG.  Knowing that we don't want to assume anything I wanted to verify the BG was low and not just distracting part of the question.  The rationale just states that the carbs is first but not why checking BG isn't other than after the other measures.  As I have researched, ADA DMMP, CDC, etc and it says to check the BG to know what the value is then give carbs according with rechecking.

    1. If you suspect low blood glucose, check blood glucose!
    2. If blood glucose is below ________, follow the plan above. (ADA DMMP)

Typing out loud...If I was thinking too far....like we shouldn't for questions...then I could think the glucometer wasn't there and only the carbs so I should do that or it would take to long to check first or maybe they aren't able to swallow....but at face value I am still concluding the same.  Determine the BG and then take action according.  If the student remained unconcious or not able to swallow then glucagon.

Can you help with a better rational to this question?  A resource to reference?

    Thanks!

I struggled with this question too and had the same thought process. Since they had collapsed but had since gotten back up without intervention it made me think the knowledge that they had diabetes was simply a distraction and I would have checked a glucose first in that case.
