    Welcome to Week #7

This is the last week of our official study group for the Spring 2023 NBCSN Exam.

That doesn’t mean we are done.  We are here if you have questions, comments, concerns, or feedback.

Week 7 in the 2020 Selekman/Cogan School Nurse Certification Review Course deals with Professional Issues and comprises 13% of the exam.

    • The Law as it relates to health and education
    • Code of Ethics (ANA/NASN)
    • Regulation of Nursing
    • Administrative Issues
    • Legal Issues
    • Use of Social Media in School Nursing

Corresponding chapters in the Selekman, Shannon, and Yonkaitis School Nursing a Comprehensive Text are Chapters 3, 8 – 10, 36 – 37.

You might be taking the exam right away, or you might be taking it towards the end of the window. You might even be preparing for another window. It doesn’t matter. This community is always available courtesy of NASN. We are here to answer your questions and celebrate with you when you pass the exam.

Be sure to visit the Exam Prep page to make sure that you have taken advantage of all the materials that you feel will be helpful to you.

Special appreciation to @Pat Krin, MSN, M.S., RN, NCSN-E, FNP-BC-Retired, FNASN for helping to moderate this page & contributing to the study group messages!  Best of luck everyone, keep us posted!

I have tried. I have looked it up. I have written notes. I still get the different boards of the state, nurse, practice act and the ANA and the state school, nursing board and the different disability acts confused.

Let me see if I can help with this confusion.
First - separate the laws that focus on disability from the laws that govern nursing practice.
The laws for those with disabilities are IDEA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act/ADA. These deal with assuring reasonable accommodations and the right to a free and equal education.
The law for nursing practice is the State Nurse Practice Act, Its purpose is to PROTECT THE PUBLIC and it dictates what nurses can and cannot do. In a court of law  - this one wins. The ANA and School Nursing Standards of Practice represent BEST PRACTICE and are recommendations; they are not law. Your school board rules and regulations are LOCAL ONLY. They may NOT require you to do something that the State Nurse Practice Act forbids.

Thanks Jan, great explanation. I sometimes suggest people make a grid. Federal, state, local.
    That might help.

    Good morning,

I have taken this exam twice & have failed both times. I signed up to take again this fall & I am nowhere near ready to take it again right now. I don't know why I thought I could study for it & take it this fall. Fall season for school nurses are by the far the busiest season. My head of health services here at my school has been out with pneumonia for 2 weeks & it has all been on me. I have 4 boys & 1 is a senior in HS preparing for college so my weekends have been between sporting events & college prep stuff. I know this sounds like lots of excuses, but I can't try to take this exam & fail again. It's pricey & for my own sanity I need to take this off my plate.

I feel bad that this group has not been as chatty as the summer one. I wish you all luck going forward.

Pat, can you lead me to who I contact to reschedule for the spring? I really don't want to have to do this over the summer again. I need to pass this & move on.

    Happy Monday!

    Warmly,

    Denise

    Hi,

I have taken practice tests and I think the biggest barrier for me is applying the "what ifs" and reading more into the questions than is needed.  It is hard not to have real- life scenarios affect my answer.  For example, there was a question about a peanut allergic kiddo that showed up in the office diaphoretic and complaining of a stomach ache and nausea.  Nowhere in the question was there anything about the child having eaten or having been exposed, and rather than gather a bit more information (like obtain a set of VS / assess the child), the correct answer was to give epi.   I know that is best practice for anaphylaxis, and "never wrong", but assessment is also important and the information given (i don't think) indicated anaphylaxis.   The child could have been running at recess or PE and be diaphoretic because of that, or have a fever, etc.  My first assessment question would have been about if the child had eaten or been exposed.     Sorry if this is the wrong week for this particular issue. -- Just trying to study it all and review.  I am taking the exam 10/28.

    Thanks for your help!

Carol, I have a saying that actually came from this guy discussion list. Stay out of the real world! When you are taking the test you have to deal with only the information you have. You can’t add or subtract any information. You need to work with what you have. Don’t say “but in the real world I would “

Remember that candidates sign a confidentiality agreement. They cannot disclose what is on the exam. Also there are three different forms of the exam, so what is on one may not be on the others.

Right, you are not allowed to disclose what is on the test but I can tell you that I think the most helpful things were the e-course, review book, and sample tests.  It is e pro purchase them all, but cheaper than retaking the test!!

I took the exam this morning and failed! I'm not very happy right now I used the review book, the texts, the encoures and the practice exams. I took the test about 10 years ago and also failed but didn't really know what I was getting myself into. I studied so hard! I've been doing school nursing for 22 years now and have MY MSN. The experience was terrible at the site because there was something wrong with the program, I lost 28 minutes of time while they fixed it. I'm really upset and very sad. Not sure I want to try again!

    Hello!

I took the exam Saturday and passed.

I had scheduled to take it online at home and had some technical difficulties.  The computer I had tested several times in the room I had prepared decided to do a  1/2 hour update.   At the last minute I had to change to another computer and scramble to make the room suitable, send my husband and animals out, etc.  That was very stressful.

If you plan to do the exam online, my recommendation is to have plan B all set!

The review course with Janice Selekman was key for me.  There were questions that were not covered, but having the strong review by attending the course online and then listening to the course online ---especially the chapters I struggled with -- as well as going through the book many times helped my anxiety level.

The test took me about 2 3/4 hours.

    Good luck everyone!!!
