    Choosing the right communication channel
We talked about the various communications channels available to you via the SchoolNurseNet community. These include the discussion list, blogs, and direct messages to the community members. When sharing information or content with your community members, consider the goal of the message and then choose the right channel. This video has some good information about content; determining the goal of it, understanding the audience, knowing the context, choosing the right channel, etc. https://youtu.be/8H0SWSMjFDk. If anyone would like to utilize direct messaging, please contact me and we'll work to establish an email template for your use.

Adding HTML to your community landing page
We looked at where to add this content to your community landing page. The option is called Additional HTML Content and it can be found in the Settings button on your community landing page. The name of this content item is the same across communities so I gave it the name "General Community Information." If you do use this, be sure to remember that community members don't always visit the landing page so they may not see the information. Use the space for basic information that doesn't change over time; information such as a link to your association website.

    Finding reports
We reviewed the reports available to you in the Settings button on your community landing page.

    Monitoring posts that go unanswered
We reviewed the Subscriber Activity report and discussed how you can monitor messages that go unanswered so that you can help members get answer to questions and/or acknowledge those who share information.

    Direct messaging community members
We discussed where to find this tool in the Settings button on your community landing page. Again, if anyone would like to utilize direct messaging, please contact me and we'll work to establish an email template for your use and go over the the feature and any questions you have.

    Email settings updates
We reviewed the new email settings or options in the Profile, under the My Account tab, in Email Preferences. The new email settings apply to direct messages you or NASN sends through the SchoolNurseNet system. It is not connected to and does not apply to discussion list messages. Whether an individual receives Discussion list messages from a community or not is managed in the Profile, under the My Account tab, in Community Notifications.

    Closing a discussion
We reviewed this new feature available to community administrators. It can be found in any discussion message using the menu found "under" the 'Reply to Discussion' button, which is really a menu of options. Please use this sparingly. We have used in only once to date. We used it on a discussion thread that was more than one year old; that had been rejuvenated but then resulted in an overwhelming number of "me too" messages where members were requesting a copy of a resource from another member.

I just listened to Sharon's webinar- it is excellent.  I encourage all who administer School Nurse Net communities to listen to it.  I haven't listened to the additional seminar yet but it sounds good too. I look forward to hearing it. Thanks very much Sharon.  You're a wealth of info and always help us when we need you!

Hello Miyoung!  Great question.  I don't have a chart but maybe this will help.

    SchoolNurseNet Community communication channels

    1. Discussion list messages: Use when you want to ask a question, get input on a topic, or get feedback.  You can also use discussion messages to announce new information but don't make this the primary use of discussion list.  The discussion list is meant to be a place where members can have a discussion.
NOTE: Members can unsubscribe from receiving discussion list messages in their email box by editing their Community Notifications in the Profile
    2. Direct messages to community members from the community administrator: Use when you have vital information to share with all members of the community.  Use when you are not asking for feedback.  Use sparingly.  Examples would be things like an annual election or a bylaws change.  Use when the discussion list will not suffice.
NOTE: Members can unsubscribe from receiving direct messages by editing their Email Preferences in the Profile.
    3. Blogs: Use when you want to present information on an important topic.  Use when you are not requiring feedback.  Use when you want to present some detail that would be too lengthy for an email.  Use when you want the topic to get exposure on the web.  Blog posts get attention from search engines; much like web pages get attention from search engines.
    4. Custom HTML on the community landing page: Use this space for information that will not change over time.  Use this space sparingly.  Remember, you community members don't go to the community landing page very often so they aren't liketly to see the information.  Examples of content you could place in this space including links to websites your members most need and important association dates.

    Question about Blog posts.
MSNO has a Press Release/paper, regarding our opposition on the legalization of marijuana in MA. Would this make a good Blog post? Do you have to add other content or just the paper?

    Hello Mary,

My question would be is is your organization looking at this as a position statement? Or are they looking to get comments and feedback by just providing information about their opinion?
It just depends on what your organization wants to accomplish.

It could be a blog post.

    Good morning Marie,

The question you have about a blog post is a good one. Sheila brings up good questions to ask yourself before posting.  It's important, before you post any content, to have a clear goal for the content (to share information, to solicit feedback, to recruit members, other) and know your audience (members, policy makers, community members, other).

With a blog post, you won't want to upload a document and have the document be your content.  You'll want to write a narrative but a brief narrative based on the goal of your content.

For example, what if you want to give this document on your website more exposure http://www.msno.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/MSNO_Opioid-Press-Release-Final.pdf?  You could post a blog post that briefly explains what the document is, where to find the document (a link to the document), why the document is important, what future steps your organization have or will be taking on the topic, etc.  You'll create a title for the blog post that includes descriptive words so that the title helps search engines find it if someone is searching for information on the topic, e.g. include your state's name, the term opioid, other.  The first sentence or two will also include descriptive words that are help search engines find it.

Lastly, don't forget to choose MSNO's community in the blog post settings so that it is connected to your community.  Then, choose to allow anyone to see the content; not just members.  This gives it the wider exposure.  For permissions on comments, we always limit blog comments to members only.

I hope this helps!  Have a great day.
