I'm so excited to see another Missouri school nurse in the study group! I'm proud of you for pursuing certification! I'm also feeling the anxiety! Are you attending the Selekman review at Coordinated School Health pre-conference?

This will be my first time to try for the certification. I've been a nurse for eons, and a school nurse for half that time. I've wanted to this for a LONG time but I know I don't test well so I've had serious thoughts about the cost verses the rewards of taking the test. Having my state offer to cover the cost has been a deal breaker, but I'm already bracing myself to pay for a second test in the summer.
One encouraging person said it's mostly stuff you already know. But reading about Erickson and Piage took me wayyyy back, it was so long ago that I studied that information. I'm pretty sure I incorporate those concepts into my work but I cannot label them - that's the sort of stuff that trips me up all the time. Due to time off for MLK and snow days I've started reading ahead and realize some of the details of cardiac assessment that are reviewed are outside of the scope of my knowledge/usage - those details also take me way back to school days.
So, Anxiety City going on here. I will study the assignments, and work in the test taking strategies, and the alternate study materials. And seriously cross my fingers, legs, toes and anything else I can think of while I take the test!

Hi Everyone! It has been inspiring to read all the comments and feel the excitement (and maybe a little anxiety) about taking the national certification exam. Thank you, Robin, for creating a forum where candidates can share their thoughts, concerns, and questions. I do recall the anxiety I had before taking the exam and wondered how I measured up. My advice to all would be to utilize the many resources available through NBCSN and NASN, including this wonderful forum, and believe in yourself. For those who are re-taking the exam, congratulations on your dedication and perseverance! The time you spend with this study group and utilizing resources will be well worth it.
I look forward to reading the great discussion over the next few weeks.

Welcome to Week #1 of our online NCSN Study Group. Here is a little study group humor to set the tone for our group because we also need to have some fun.
Remember to enjoy the process. In the end, you might just find that you learned a lot through this refresher course in school nursing practice! To begin this process, it's suggested to start with the Selekman/Cogan School Nursing Certification Review book 3rd Edition Digital and there is a hard copy version available as well.
Selekman, Shannon, and Yonkaitis School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text is an important resource to help prepare for the exam as well. The 3rd edition was released in the summer of 2022.
Let's start our study group by reviewing the content of Chapters 1 & 2 of the School Nursing Certification Review book. One idea that worked for me and others I have spoken with is to take the assessment at the end of the chapter first, and then while reviewing the content, pay extra attention to the sections where you missed the mark. Just so you are not alarmed, there is no assessment for Chapter 1, but please do the assessment for Chapter 2 this week.
In addition to the information in the review book, you might want to review the Selekman, Shannon, and Yonkaitis School Nursing: a comprehensive text textbook and/or NASN's White Papers on the specific topics.
Assignment for Week #1: Review Chapters 1 and 2 in the Selekman, Cogan review book.
Review Book Chapter 1 National Certification – The Why and How
This chapter provides general information about the exam including:
- Why and How National Certification is Achieved
Please visit our website at www.nbcsn.org for information. You can also find some of this information in the Candidate Handbook (we suggest that you download it for future reference) available at https://www.nbcsn.org/resources/ncsn-handbook/
Corresponding Selekman, et.al. 3rd ed. School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text Chapters 1 & 2
Review Book Chapter 2 – Foundations of Pediatric Nursing: Understanding Children and Their Families
- Growth and Development
- Foundations of School Nursing Practice
Corresponding Selekman, et.al. 3rd ed. School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text 3rd Edition Chapters 1-4 and 11-13
This week's assignment: share a reflection on why you decided to pursue national certification with our group. If you have any questions about the material, please post them to the list. The more responses, the richer the discussion! I am here to support the group in any way I can, and I encourage you to reach out to each other as well for support, ideas, and suggestions to create the kind of virtual study group that you need. Remember when discussing questions refer to the questions and answers by chapter, number, and letters, eg., Chapter 2 Question 3 Answer B. The information in the review book is copyrighted so you cannot copy the questions and answers to the discussion list.
Congratulations on taking this important step. Once you dig into the content, I promise it will be fun and you will feel empowered by taking ownership of the process. Take the word study out of the equation and substitute it with being curious, we are lifelong learners, it's the nature of a nurse! Keep in touch, and happy learning!
