Welcome to Week #2 of our online study group!

We are moving full-steam ahead in preparation for the upcoming Summer exam window.  It is energizing to see how many school nurses have joined the group and are
contributing to the ongoing conversation. Thank you to those who have shared your experiences and posted questions.

Special appreciation to @Pat Krin, MSN, M.S., RN, NCSN-E, FNP-BC-Retired, FNASN

for your comments and clarification on important questions raised. Your suggestion to share our nursing journeys was wonderful and the contributions from the school nurses have been fascinating to read! Thanks to all who are participating in this group. We are off to a great start!

Suggested Reading for Week #2, we are digging deeper into Chapter 2 of the Review book. We introduced it last week, but with so much to absorb, we believe that focusing on this Chapter by itself this week will give you all space to review and get used to the pacing of the online study group. We will not be repeating other chapters, it only happens this week as a way to ease you into setting your study time.

Selekman, Cogan: School Nursing Certification Review book Chapter 2. We give this chapter an extra week of attention because it is the basis of our practice.

Foundations of Pediatric Nursing Children and Their Families

    I  Growth and Development

II Foundations of School Nursing Practice

This comprises 27% of the exam.

Selekman, Shannon and Yonkaitis School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text 3rd Edition Chapters
    1-4 and 11-13:

    1. Foundations of School Nursing Practice Chapters 1-4
    2. Growth and Development Chapters 11-13

Recommended contribution to the group for Week #2:  Doesn't that sound better
    than assignment ;).

Share your outcomes with the group this week.  Comment on what surprised you about the process, what you learned, and what resources you chose to reinforce areas that needed more focused attention. How are you staying motivated this week?

As promised, here are some test-taking tips specifically geared toward multiple-choice
Nursing exam questions! (11 Test-Taking Tips & Strategies For Nurses * Nurseslabs)

    1. Read Questions Carefully
Scores on tests are greatly affected by reading ability. In answering a test item,
you should begin by carefully reading the stem and then asking yourself the
    following questions:
 What is the question really asking?
     Are there any keywords?
 What is information relevant to answering this question included in the stem?
 How would I ask this question in my own words?
 How would I answer this question in my own words?

After you have answered these questions, carefully read the options and then ask
    yourself the following questions:
 Is there an option that is similar to my answer?
 Is this option the best, most complete answer to the question?

Deal with the question as it is stated, without reading anything into it, or
making assumptions about it. Answer the question asked, not the one you would like to
answer. For simple recall items, the self-questioning process usually will be completed
quickly. For more complex items the self-questioning process may take longer, but it
should assist you in clarifying the item and selecting the best response.

    2. Identify Keywords
Certain keywords in the stem, the options, or both should alert you to the need
for caution in choosing your answer. Because few things are absolute without
exception, avoid selecting answers that include words such as always, never, all, every,
only, must, no, except, and none. Answers containing these keywords are rarely correct
because they place special limitations and qualifications on potentially correct answers.

    For example:

All of the following are services of the National Kidney Foundation except:
    1. Public education programs
    2. Research about kidney disease
    3. Fund-raising affairs for research activities
    4. Identification of potential transplant recipients

This stem contains two keywords: all and except. They limit the correct answer choice
to the one option that does not represent a service of the National Kidney Foundation.
When except, not, or a phrase such as all but one of the following appears in the stem,
the inappropriate option is the correct answer in this instance, option 4.
If the options in an item do not seem to make sense because more than one option
is correct, reread the question; you may have missed one of the keywords in the stem.
Also, be on guard when you see one of the keywords in an option; it may limit
the context in which such an option would be correct.

Here is a free "Test Taking Strategies" course from NurseBuilders:
Test Taking Techniques - A Guide For Nursing Certification
Check out the Exam Prep Materials on www.nbcsn.org.
Happy digging in and learning! Keep us posted on your progress!

Hi everyone. I think I am most surprised by the amount of information in this chapter….. I haven’t studied for a test in 35 years!
Other resources I have been using are “School Nursing- Scope and Standards of Practice”. This will be helpful for a few of our review chapters. The NCSN Study Cards are also helpful. They are open ended questions, not like the multiple choice practice tests, which really test your recall of information.

One test taking strategy I learned was from Chapter 2, question #15. I chose answer b because it was the closest answer to the age of 12. I now know you really need to make sure the answer you choose is in the range of something, not closest to it.

I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend.

    Kendra.

I realized I need to sit down and just memorize Erikson's stages of development

I also did not really like the question about permanent teeth #15 I think ... So most student get them by 12, so I chose 11 but 14 was the correct answer.. that is just confusing and I do not think the rationale explains that very well.

Sarah, think of it this way. Your knowledge tells you that most children have their permanent teeth (except the final molars) by age 12.

Your choices are 9,11,14,18. You can definitely rule out 9 and 18 which leaves you two choices. You know that most children have them by 12, which means that many won't have them by 11, but they should have them by age 14, does that help?

Always try to narrow it down to two choices first.

I recommend that people spend $10 of their money and 1 hour of their time to view

    ·        Nursing Certification Exam Preparation Studying, Anxiety Management, Test Taking Techniques from Nurse Builders 50-minute course for $10.00 with 1.0 ANCC contact hour.

    ·        There is also a free https://ecourses.nursebuilders.net/courses/test-taking-techniques-a-guide-for-nursing-certification-exams but that one does not touch on as many areas.

    Pat and Sarah,

I was just looking at this question and trying to understand why I decided on age 11 as well.

    Thank you for elaborating.

Can you help explain the correct answer for the chapter 2 question 8:

    8. The primary role of the School Nurse is to:

    1. Be the health educator for the school
    2. Be a health advocate for families in the community
    3. Help keep the school community healthy and safe

    d. Develop individualized health plans

    Thank you!

    Let's take the question apart.
Look at the stem (the question or statement) it is asking about the PRIMARY role if the school nurse.
All the roles listed are important BUT remember the word PRIMARY. Look at the choice's again with that in mind and see what you come with and we'll go further Tuesday.

    Let's take the question apart.
Look at the stem (the question or statement) it is asking about the PRIMARY role if the school nurse.
All the roles listed are important BUT remember the word PRIMARY. Look at the choice's again with that in mind and see what you come with and we'll go further Tuesday.

    ·        There is also a free ecourses.nursebuilders.net/courses/... but that one does not touch on as many areas.

    Warm regards,

Let's take these questions apart and discuss each one. The first thing I need to say is that a couple of you said "in the real world." When you say that you are bringing things into the question that aren't there. Don't think about the real word, think about the question. You have a question or a statement and four choices (and only four choices) for the answer. Don't add anything to the stem or the choices.  Put everything else out of your mind for the moment. Forget the real world. Look at the item (question) below. The stem (question or statement) in this question has an important word PRIMARY.

So the question is asking what the most important role of the  school nurse is.

    8. The primary role of the School Nurse is to:

    1. Be the health educator for the school
    2. Be a health advocate for families in the community
    3. Help keep the school community healthy and safe
    4. Develop individualized health plan

We can be a health educator for the school, but not the health educator

We can be a health advocate for families in the community, but that is not our primary role.

Helping to keep the community health and safe is why we are there!

Developing individualized health plans is a part of the job.

Hi!  I am a horrible test taker (I need to stop declaring that. lol) and your explanation definitely helps. It also helps to understand the process of ruling out answers as well as really practicing not reading too much into the question.

    Good Morning Everyone!!

This week I have learned that I absolutely stink at memorizing Erickson's stages of development. I made up some note cards and Ill be reviewing those over and over again. There is a TON of information in this chapter.

I also chose the same answer as everyone else for question 15..I chose age 11. Reading all of the responses and Pats explination of why that was the correct answer I realize that I really really need to slow down and make sure I'm picking the correct answer to the question that is actually being asked, just not how I'm interpreting the question.

Hi everyone! I wanted to share something that I am using as a study tool.  I find it quite helpful for self testing, learning and recall.   It's amazing how sometimes I read information, undertand it and then soon forget either all the information or important details. This app is very helpful for this. Hope you find it as useful! It is called Anki and it is best used on a computer.
