    Welcome to Week #7

This is the last week of our official study group for the Spring 2024 NBCSN Exam.

That doesn’t mean we are done.  We are here if you have questions, comments, concerns, or feedback.

Week 7 in the 2020 Selekman/Cogan School Nurse Certification Review Course deals with Professional Issues and comprises 13% of the exam.

    • The Law as it relates to health and education
    • Code of Ethics (ANA/NASN)
    • Regulation of Nursing
    • Administrative Issues
    • Legal Issues
    • Use of Social Media in School Nursing

Corresponding chapters in the Selekman, Shannon, and Yonkaitis School Nursing a Comprehensive Text are Chapters 3, 8 – 10, 36 – 37.

You might be taking the exam right away, or you might be taking it towards the end of the window. You might even be preparing for another window. It doesn’t matter. This community is always available courtesy of NASN. We are here to answer your questions and celebrate with you when you pass the exam.

Be sure to visit the Exam Prep page to make sure that you have taken advantage of all the materials that you feel will be helpful to you.

Best of luck everyone, keep us posted!

Just took the first practice exam and got a 60/75. It definitely doesn't boost my confidence, but it does help with leading me in the right direction to know what information to review.

Robin, Can you talk me thru question 2, in Chapter 7, page 239. I feel like I can grasp each answer and the purpose of each and then when I get to another question with the same like answers, I am confused again. Is there 1 or 2 key words that I can stick in my brain for each? Thank you

    Hi Monica,

Thank you for your question. I think you can break it down this way:

The standards of school nursing practice are developed by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) in collaboration with the American Nurses Association (ANA). The document "School Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice" outlines the expected level of school nursing practice and professional performance, providing authoritative statements on the duties that school nurses should competently perform.

The Nurse Practice Act (NPA) is crucial as it sets the legal requirements for nursing licensure and practice, guiding nurses in understanding their roles, responsibilities, and limitations within their scope of practice. Nurses must adhere to the rules and regulations outlined in the NPA to ensure they are fully qualified and competent in their roles as registered nurses.

State Nurses Associations play a crucial role in advocating for nurses and the nursing profession at the state level. They work towards fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting safe and ethical work environments, and advocating healthcare issues that impact nurses and the public.

IDEA is ONLY for those children 1-21 who require SPECIAL EDUCATION AND RELATED SERVICES while at school. It requires that children who qualify (within the 13 categories listed) receive a FREE AND APPROPRIATE EDUCATION in the LEAST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT. It requires that an INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PLAN be developed with the addition of a TRANSITION PLAN by the time the child is 16. It also mandates PERSON FIRST LANGUAGE.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 has the broadest definition of disability and is for ANYONE OF ANY AGE, including college students and the staff with whom you work. It is just one paragraph long and says "if otherwise qualified" must be (accepted/ admitted/allowed) WITH REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS.

You do NOT need both an IEP and a 504 plan. The IEP comes with federal money; the 504 plan does not.

I was studying chapter 5, please forgive me if I missed someone else asking this question but, the vaccine medically contraindicated for a child with a known allergy to yeast is Hep B, but I just learned that some  HPV vaccine  also contains yeast. Which is the correct answer to question 10 in chapter 5?

    Thank you

Be cognizant of the fact that the review book was published in 2020, so probably written in 1919, and information changes over time. You need to look at this question at this time as poorly written and discount it. This information will be reviewed and revised as needed in the next edition.
    Warm regards,
